i have had a bad battery in me 90 all winter so i brought a new one. went out tonite to put it on connected her up all was fine . lights radio wipers the usual glow plugs working went to crank it over and nothing just a small click from the relay but no start. wtf it was fine 2 weeks ago when i last used it the starter was strong but now nothing. i got the multi meter out and checked if there was any power to starter and it wasnt showing nothing mind its dark and i cant really tell what im doing on the road side. any ideas could it be the wiring or has my starter gave up the ghost i hope not because its a disco engine and a bastard to get to and ive got a short temper any one else had similar expereince with a 200 tdi

Try using a test lamp or power probe. That way you CAN see what yer doing in the dark. Without knowing for sure if there's power to the ignition wire this is all pure speculation.

Yes starter motors do fail. Yes it is known. yes the feed to the starter has been known to break down. Have you tried simply wiggling the lead to give it a better connection?

well the ignition to solinoid is activating using the idiots guide by switching the interirior light on when i turn the key it dims so that takes the ignition out the equation yes its all speculation until i can have a good look tommorow after work. theres 3 or 4 things i got to check i could wire a 12 volt feed straight to the starter to see if she spins

It's quicker to just short across the back of the starter with a screwdriver.;)

Or bladdy dangerous, friend put a hole in the roof of his landy by trying the same thing with the battery to "see it was working" using a spanner. The spanner get wedged between the two terminals, started to heat up rapidly, and started to expand making it impossible to remove until the pressure got so much it shot upwards through the roof!

At least if tour doing it under there you may have time to get the cable odd the battery before it destroys something if it did get stuck/welded to something

Is your friend paddy or murphy?:p

ive got 12 volts where the leads from the main battery go to starter motor where they bolt on. easy to get to but ive got no power to the single red and white wire thats pushs onto a spade connecter is that a exciter cable or something (bastard to get to ) surely that wire starts the solenoid or am i wrong.it then connects to a relay inside the cab ive changed that relay but no different im running out ideas

red+white should triger the solonoid.

Sounds like no power to triger it to me. Try putting some power direct onto the one that goes into the cab.

Also check the other one is making a good earth!

You are correct. Check to make sure that there is a live feed to the relay. worst case scenario you can always run a new cable through.
