got a p38 diesel auto 1997 and when going up hills its gets to 50mph and wont drop gear it just keeps losing speed till it levels out a bit then starts to speed up again can get 60-70mph on the flat but hills is just killing it tried to drop a gear but nothing happened

Check the MAP sensor is clear of obstructions and the manifold outlet and the hose from that to MAP sensor is clear and not split or cracked allowing pressure loss. Other than that diag.

If it is just losing speed and not power, a slipping torque converter would do this or the auto box has problems.
Oil burner should be as good as the steam burners up the hills.

Carefully remove the feed line to the fuel filter bowl and place in a measuring jug.

Either turn ignition on and crank or bridge the relay for 10 secs....should get approx 180ml of diesel in 10 secs

No lift pump with cranking on a 1997 Ant. Only with glow plugs or with engine running. To check it properly you have to power terminal 5 on relay 12 socket for ten seconds to measure flow rate into measuring cup.

Check the pipes into and out of the intercooler are OK too. If they've popped off or sprung a leak you'll lose power. I think the one out of the turbo sometimes delaminates? My old one fell apart after leaking oil all over the car.

IIRC a refurbed fuel pump from Diesel Jones in Manchester works out about £750. Then you have the hassle of changing it. Not a bad job but you do need to right tools.
