My alternator has been on the way out for a good few months now, only JUST pushing out 12V, and the battery warning light has been flickering continuously.
After finally getting fed up with asking strangers for jump starts, and relising I need a degree of reliability, I finally got it sorted today. It had needed a jump once every 3 or 4 times I start it recently, even when warm.
So I took it down my mates garage this morning, took the alternator off, and the local auto electrian specialists (Curd Bros, Tunbridge Wells) picked it up to recondition it/new bushes or whatever it is they do!
An hour or so later I get a phonecall saying its ****ed so itl be cheaper to just replace it. Oh well I thought. Here comes a bill for £150+.
A bit later they drop round a brand new alternator for the grand some of....£45 (+VAT)! I couldnt beleive it, it seems so cheap. I fitted it, and finally I can look at the dash without seeing an annoying red light flickering away!
I also popped into halfords, where my battery came from, which came with a 4 year warranty. It only has a month left til its out of warranty, so I had that replaced as well, FOC.
So not a bad day really, a brand new alternator and brand new battery for..£60 or so? Cold weather? bring it on!
