I have bought a non runner 2000 Defender TD5 at auction. I've discovered it has been robbed of the ECU from under the drivers seat as well as most of its relays and I'm sure the list wont stop there.

Is it possible to fit and reprogram an ECU from a Discovery TD5, or what is my best way to go about replacing it.

Well, you can buy a used TD5 ECU and get it reprogrammed for your Defender.

There’s companies online that will do that for you, although you may have to source the ECU first, probably from a scrapped Discovery

Thanks and yes I would have a good idea that a used EUC from a Defender would probably reprogram for my Defender and also I appreciate there are companies online that will do this for me (at a price) but what I would really like to know is if an ECU from a Discovery 2 would be suitable for reprogramming to the Defender?

If it is a for a TD5, it will be from a Disco 2, because they are the only Discos to have TD5 engines.

chainsaw,
You have a choice of two ECUs either MSB 000080 this one would have been the original part fitted to a MY2000 Defender TD5, it is the early type you will have to program the 10 ASalarm to the replacement ECU and set the five injector values, the fuel map is not programmable on this model ECU without changing the chip.
The other choice is NNN500020 this is the later replacement ECU which would be supplied as a replacement by a main dealer, again you will need to program the 10AS alarm to the replacement ECU and set the five injector values, also program an appropriate fuel map because unless it has come off a 10p Defender an incorrect fuel map will be installed.
As an added note I do not believe either of these ECUs are available new the last price from LR for NNN500020 was around £700.00. Used price for MSB 00080 expect to pay £125.00 + and the prices for NNN500020 are going through the roof I have seen used, condition unknown advertised at £500.00.

Thanks - great info, do you know when they stopped using the 10p engine?

I might be needing a replacement ECU for my 2005 TD5 Defender. My very knowledgable mechanic said a Discovery 2 one would work if re programmed, but need one from a manual transmission D2. That might be the stumbling block, as not many D2's were sold in manual transmission. Good luck with your search.
