me too. mine worked fine till 2 weeks ago but i had a '92 classic RR for 6 years and it never worked on that one.
 
I am 99.7654% sure all your problems are down too a cracked vacuum hose. Do not bother trimming the ends, just replace the whole lot for what it costs. TWEETS if you have a diesel your vacuum pump is located under the tray for the jack (i hope you have small hands !!!:) )

Nope V8 here and again no, I'm 6' 4" and built like a brick **** house so no, I don't have small hands :(

On my V8 4.6 I had a split in the plastic TEE section, I found this when I was about to change the hose.
The foot switch and bellows are known to cause trouble as well.

change that to 100%.....as you said hose was cracked :D
