No 4th gear

Hello all. Just got myself a discovery 1. Its a auto but wont go into 4 gear. Oil and filter change in the gear box i should think. Was wondering how far could i drive it. As need to get it home to work on. Or is it better aa it. Thanks for the help.
 
No not changed yet. Only just got it. Drives fine apart from changing up to 4th. So was wondering how far i can drive it. Got a 35mile drive home. To be able to do the oil and filter change. Cheers
 
it wont change till you do over 50 , its well worth dropping oil and check its colour carefully black means a burning clutch pack dark brown oil has been in too long, youll need 5 litres of dexron 2 or 3, you can only change 1/2 of the 9 litres it holds if its real dirty change again after a run

It should be in forth at around 25 or 30 MPH on the flat. Torque convertor lockup which many think is forth should come in around 50 MPH.
 
How far could i drive it as it is. Need to get it home. Or should i have it trailered back. Dont want to do anymore harm.Thankyou for your help.
 
as far as you want , if the box has a mechanical fault, it needs rebuilding anyhow , if its stuck valve just dont thrash it ie keep below 50

I had a similar problem on my P38,drove it home,about 60 miles,with no problems,to get it to go into top gear,i just drove it as normal,when i thought it should change up,i just blipped the throttle,this made it change up,but when i got it home,i changed the fluid and filter,but i used the lucas brand atf,what a difference that made,silky smooth gear changes after doing that.Will find a link for the ATF for you.

Loads of info on an auto box in RAVE such as this below, also if at 45 to 50 mph u select 3rd engine revs should increase as u have moved from 4th to 3rd.

SYMPTOM 9 - No 4th gear ’D’ selected


FAULT - 4th to 3rd downshift valve stuck or

3rd to 4th upshift valve stuck

FAULT - Clutch brake 4

NOTE: The direct drive clutch will only
engage if 4th gear is engaged at 40 to 45mph.

Carry out road test pressure check with gauge connected to torque converter.
Normal pressure

FAULT - Failed direct drive clutch

Pressures correct but remains high

FAULTS POSSIBLE -

Direct drive clutch and torque converter control valve stuck

Hysteresis valve stuck

Direct drive clutch control valve stuck
