I've been a very proud X-Trail owner since Sept 02. I have the diesel
variant in Sport trim, full UK spec.
I'm thinking of having the EMU chipped. Has anyone had this
modification done to their car?
I've been quoted a price of circa £500 with a "promise" of an
additonal 30 horses under the bonnet.
My main concern, should I proceed is to what extent this will
invalidate my manufacturers warranty. I'm assuming that only the
warranty relevant to the EMU should be affected, but I'll have to
clear this with Nissan.

Anyway - if any other X-Trail owners out there have been down this
road and/or have had the modification done, I'd be very interested to
here your experiences - good or bad.

I reckon that Nissan would include the engine, not just the EMU. The
engine will be put under additional load if it's producing another 30
brake.

It would probably totally void your warranty. I may be wrong though.

I take it you are intending telling your insurers? The potential
consequences of having no insurance are rather more serious than not having
a warranty

I think you'd be looking at warranty for the entire vehicle withdrawn
by Nissan. Putting the horses on steroids will require extra stopping
oomph, so the brake system will be under extra duress. Bound to
increase the torque on the axle and bearings. Gearbox is going to get
some extra wear. I'd be very surprised if Nissan said okay!

And not forgetting your increased insurance premiums! Are you sure
this is a good idea??????

Interesting post.

I have the Sport-X with the same engine. I was thinking of asking a Nissan
dealer if they would do this for me - the new 2.2 dci model produces 136bhp
from what I believe is the same engine as the earlier model, so I assume it
is down to an upgraded chip. If they did the alteration, even though you
would pay through the nose for it, I reckon the warranty would be unaffected
and the insurance company would be more sympathetic.

In both cases ask them to put their thoughts in writing BEFORE you
carry out the chipping. In todays world I very much suspect that
eitheir or both parties will claim no liability if the vehicle is
modified.
