Have been looking around for my next new vehicle, and from the 4x4's
available the Nissan X-Trail seems to have some very positive reviews
all round.

Anyone got one that they'd like to share information on?

I appreciate this isn't a "real" 4x4, but with a new model coming out
it looks pretty healthy from everything I have read on the Internet,
and I'm not planning on scaling mountains vertically with it, just to
do the odd bit of towing and escaping from muddy fields etc.

I've had an X-Trail 2.2D Sport for about 18 mths and found it an
excellent choice. I do a fair bit of towing and live out in the sticks
and its well suited to my lifestyle and location.

Its roomy, very comfortable, economic, reliable and the only niggle I
have is that the plastics in the load compartment tend to get scuffed
quite easily and the lycra-type upholstery is not terribly
kid-friendly (it marks quite easily). I should have gone for the
leather seats.

Certainly; I've just (1/09/03) bought an X-Trail after a lengthy bit of
research on
which car to buy next. I was looking for something sub-£20,000, reliable,
at least
reasonably decent on- AND off-road, capable of running in 4x4 on paved roads
and,
of course, had some good reviews/opinions behind it!!

I looked very hard at the Jeep Cherokee 2.8 but eventually I plumped for the
X-Trail
2.0 Sport version and I'm very happy with it, drives like a dream on-road,
quick off the
mark, very stable on the corners. I like the fact that, when not in 4WD,
it's FRONT
wheel drive. Just a personal thing.
Haven't done much off-roading, only muddy fields and tracks really but it's
taken them
in it's stride. I wouldn't write it off totally as an off-roader, it
appears to have a good
reputation with it's LOCK/AUTO/2WD system and if you scoot over to aus.cars
there
are people there who've taken them into the Australian Outback. Obviously,
though, if
you wanted to do full-on, get-down mud-plugging you wouldn't choose an
X-Trail :)

Quibbles? Well, the interior seems like it could scuff up quite easily and
the gearbox does
need to be worked a bit (this might just be the way I drive though..).

I *really* love it. And, for what it's worth, I still haven't seen any
negative reviews (probably
tempting fate there :)

Good hunting!
Cheers, Chris

Thanks Ron & Chris!

These are exactly the sorts of impressions I am getting from doing
random searches on the Internet. Now this must either be a good
vehicle or Nissan have a big team of lawyers who chase after anyone
who posts a negative article.... (only kidding).

Top Gear magazine has what seems to be a relatively objective write up
on the X-Trail. Cheap to service - cost £100 in the first year. Some
interior faults - seat back at rear wobbles, trim doesn't stand up to
wear well. Not very fast, large boot, can off road a bit but it's no
Defender.

<raises eyebrow> interesting remark from Top Gear there. Not very fast?
all the models do over 100mph, peaking at 116mph with the 2.5 petrol.
seems fast enough and certainly compares favourably with most competitors..

what were they hoping for? They weren't racing it with the Cayenne
were they? :)

One suspects they mean acceleration, or they were comparing to their
usual hot hatch/saloon line up.

Chris,

What sayed you from the Cherokee?

regards

Mike

> What sayed you from the Cherokee?

Well, not much in the end - I liked it a lot and I thought it was a good
drive
on-road. It also had a good reputation off-road (though not quite as good
as
the old Cherokee).

However, it was just a bit beyond what I wanted to pay (I wasn't interested
in Command-Trac versions, which are a bit cheaper) and, from my research,
there did seem to be a bit of a question mark over Jeep reliability (though
the new Cherokee has a heavy Mercedes input so it's probably less of an
issue?).

The other slight quibble I had was with the cabin which I thought was a bit
cramped, didn't have much storage and generally seemed a bit under-designed
for a £20,000+ car..

That was enough for the X-Trail to edge ahead in my thinking, but provided I
don't
hear any horror stories about the Cherokee in the next few years, I'm
certainly going
to consider it again when I change cars.

Cheers, Chris

Seconded - we have discussed this before and no point in going through it
all again - but in my book (i.e. with my needs likes and preferences) there
is not one single reason to buy an X-Trail rather than a Kia Sorento - yet I
dont have anything against the Nissan.

You may have different preferences, fine, but at least look at the Sorento.

Which 4x4 won 4x4 magazines overall 4x4 of the year award recently (beating
some very respected new models from much bigger "names") - it wasn't the
X-trail. That doesnt mean that everybody has to buy the Sorento (and those
that do will have a modest wait), but if you are in the market for a 4x4 at
this sort of price it would be at best a little foolish not to at least
consider the vehicle that is winning so many awards.

Crap dashboard layout........
The Dials are in the middle of the dash, what a daft idea that was....put me
off, bought a 2.5TDS Frontera instead !!!!
Far better 4x4 !!

All our E-mail is scanned by Norton Anti Virus before being sent....

The same as the Citroen Picasso, same dashboard for left or right hand
drive.
