Many thanks for the help Ronseal! Atleast I know what to do now
No probs, I'm on my PC now so can type (bloody phone).
When you get the carb out of the box you will see it has tamperproof plastic covers on the volume and idle speed screws. You can pull them off with pliers if they annoy you.
Set the volume screw (to find it, see this link
http://leo.mocce.com/~guido/AAAA/Zenith/Z36IVWS.pdf it gives you pretty much all you need to know about Zeniths) all the way in but be very gentle, don't tighten it. Once you feel resistance, unwind it 720 degrees (2 full turns). This is a good starting point. Start engine, warm her up nicely, take her for a short drive to get a feel if she is running better than before etc... Leave the engine running and start unwinding the vol screw slowly, this lets the engine react to changes in fuel mix. listen for the revs rising, keep going slowly until the revs peak and just begin to fall. Screw back in until the revs hit the peak. Now adjust the idel screw down to around 800 RPM or less if possible. The engine should be on the rich side now so take her for a drive, see how the exhaust smells and then give her another turn in (i.e screw in 360 degrees to lean her out). Take if another drive and see how the exhaust smells etc... It shouldn't really be popping or missing atall, but then again these are old engines and it may just be a factor of something else.
All I would say is, once you've got it right, leave it alone! A gas analyzer can be used by a mechanic or your MOT guy but this can mean a lean setting which 2.25 engines apparently aren't much of a fan of. So richen it out a turn if you have this done.
My new Zenith is a Britpart one but for all the people like me with an issue, there's probably 25 that don't have one. Even if it is a bit dodgy, they can be tweaked no worries to fix anything. The accelerator pump issue on mine is an easy fix, but I just bought a new Weber instead and keep the Zenith as a spare or if the Weber ices up or whatever. I have to say, the two carbs are really similar when in good tune.
Hope it goes ok. Nice easy job for a massive result!
