Hi everyone,
Screenshot 2021-11-13 at 21.32.05.jpeg

I have just bought my second RR - a 1999/T P38 4.0 for £995. 91k on the clock, and almost everything works! The only thing that didn't work was the heater matrix, but I have had this fixed by my local garage...almost! The rubber pipes that attach to the metal pipes that come through the bulkhead into the engine bay from the heater matrix haven't had their clips reattached, so as this is pressurised coolant is leaking from the pipes - no surprise there! I will be taking the car back tomorrow to get this rectified. The rubber pipes then travel down the right bank, along side the rocker cover, and attach (with jubilee clips this time replaced!) to metal pipes, the ends of which are a little rusty and I could do with replacing these. I think one of these metal pipes goes to the thermostat?? Please forgive my ignorance, but I am trying to locate a description and part number for these two metal pipes - can anyone assist me please? I have had a good rummage on the web for over an hour but can't find any diagrams etc that describe the metal pipes. I am purchasing a full workshop manual which will obviously prove invaluable! Many thanks - I look forward to contributing to the forum as often as I can - I have been a contributing member of Volvo and Ford forums for some years. Dave.

I have found an online manual. The pic below shows the metal pipes I need, but conveniently they are not described! The lower metal pipe does go down to the thermostat housing, the upper metal pipe goes round the front of the engine. Both metal pipes have rubber hoes attached to them and these in turn are attached to what appears to be the metal pipes going through the bulkhead and attaching to the heater matrix. These two metal pipes need replacing as they look a little rusty to me.

Other than the rusty pipes.....the interior is more or less mint. Engine and gearbox are silky smooth and everything else, including the air suspension, appears to work as it should. Looking at the heads it seems like the head gaskets have been done at some point - they look far too clean for a car >20 years old! Just had a new water pump, pipe and thermostat, oh and a Terrafirma steering damper and the matching tyres appear nearly new. The MoT history was excellent. Although the car was reasonably local (advertised on eBay) after various messages to and fro with the seller I bought the car blind and he dropped it off for me. So far I haven't been disappointed. I have wanted a P38 for literally years but I have always been put off by stories of their unreliability. A mate had one that he purchased fairly new but he abused it thinking that all the maintenance it ever required was a weekly bucket of water thrown over it. A minor water leak was ignored and he cooked the car several times before it was, rather unsurprisingly, scrapped. Shame, it was a gorgeous car - dark blue with grey leather and mint when he bought it. Not so three years later!

Hi Brian, I have taken a couple of pics of the pipes, attached. You can see where the pipes are corroded where they are jubilee-clipped to the (non-genuine) rubber hoses. There has been a leak here which you can see on the rocker cover. The lower metal pipe goes down the righthand side of the engine (pic attached). The garage failed to attach clips to the other end of the rubber hoses where they attach to the metal pipes that go through the bulkhead to the heater matrix.

Brilliant, thanks Brian - much appreciated! That looks like the two pipes. The lower one is weeping I think, but at that price it's got to be worth replacing the two pipes. I'll get on to that. Cheers!
