Hi, I had a series 11A before, and am positive it was 2wd all the time until you engaged the H/L ratios through the transfer box.

Am I right in thinking my 1987 90 is permanent 4wd? The manual does not seem to say.

Thought i would ask ahead of jacking it up tomorrow to check!

Cheers

Hi, yes your 90 is permanent 4WD, all 90, 110 and Defender models are permanent 4WD. It should say so somewhere in the owners handbook. You only have 2 gear levers instead of the 3 you had in a series vehicle. The short stubby lever controls the HIGH and LOW range selection AND the DIFF LOCK for the centre diff. Also just in front of the gear lever, attached to the fuse box cover, there should be a warning and information plate regarding the permanent 4WD system.
When you take this vehicle for it's annual M.O.T DO NOT allow the tester to use a single axle brake test roller to perform the brake test. A twin axle testing rig must be used. If all four wheels are not turned at the same speed the transmission will be damaged. If the test station has only got a single axle brake roller rig they must use a portable decelerometer to check the brakes.
