hi guys,

New to the forum but not new to Landys. Grown up with them in their standard form. Want to rebuild one myself now from the ground up for a little bit of green laning / off roading. Probably the start of the build is a little way off but just trying to get ideas about what to do.

First big question is engine choice. I'm not new to big V8s but would like to re-build my own from the ground up which I haven't done before. Trouble is looking through the old posts most seem to recommend the 200 or 300 diesel version which is really going to spoil my fun! Am I completely mad for wanting the V8?

Thanks,

Jon

depends what is important to you.. the V8 is a fantastic engine, sounds great and drives really nicely...

....but there are some that say it is too juicy (go for LPG if that is important and you will improve on the running costs compared to a derv)

...there are also some that say it doesn't like water but if you are building it from the ground up then you can sort that out as you go by thinking carefully about where to fit the electrics and sealing them against water

...I am sure some will criticise the V8 reliability or pulling power or something along those lines but I honestly think the V8 is as good as the diesel and although there are things that can go wrong with a V8 there are also things that can go wrong with a derv...

I suspect this is like the 'which kit' question on the cobra forum!

What sort of power should I be looking for out of the V8 for manageable power? I was thinking with a cam upgrade, mega squirt (which would hopefully solve some of the water logging problems too) with an edelbrock inlet manifold and some home porting of the heads I could get it up to about 210 or 220 if I went for a standard 3.5. Would this be too much for off roading?

Thanks,

jon
