Hi, I've actually registered for my daughter, who's just purchased a highly modded landy, against my best advice. Looks very nice and would probably win prizes offroad, but I can see other issues!

I think she will struggle for insurance, because I think after reading some threads on here that it would require an MVR and any number of other bits of paper, possibly SVA and re reg'.

I would appreciate very much any info, please take a look at this ebay ad for the vehicle she bought, it describes the work done in reasonable detail, pictures included.

Personally I think she'll struggle to get insurance if she declares this stuff..

LANDROVER 90 200TDI DEFENDER 90 OFFROADER OFFROAD BEAST on eBay (end time 27-Jul-09 22:49:56 BST)

Incidentally, it was withdrawn from the auction after she made an offer, she paid £3350, he was asking for £4000.

Thanks

The only thing I'd worry about on that is the height of the lift; it puts the C of G a bit high for off-road stability IMO, all the 'mods' listed are insurable; do a search on insurance on here, there are several freds on the subject; mine has most of the extras listed and Lancaster don't turn a hair about 'em.
Just one thing; unless she's already experienced off road; make sure she gets some proper driver training before she takes it off road, as novice driver + tricked up Landy can be a recipe for disaster!!

Thanks for the quick responses, doesn't sound as drastic as I thought, we'll see what tomorrow brings!

Hmm, not very consistent is all I can say about insurance companies.

I rang Lancaster, who simply said they could not offer cover for such a highly modified vehicle at any price! they said maybe they could try some more options, but only if we agreed not to use the motor for commuting to and from work and accepted other restrictions! KAK

I then rang the NFU, with whom we already have an L200 insured, they wouldn't touch it either! KAK

Sureterm quoted £347, with enough restrictions including mileage to stop you using it and a huge excess to boot, utter rubbish, is anyone really insured with such poor providers? KAK

Strikes me the insurers have no idea and just throw the paperwork up in the air, and everything depends on which way it lands. Or is it that there are not really many seriously modified Landys, just primarily some with cosmetic mods perhaps, so they get used to that, then real mod's just confuse them?

Thankfully I got quotes back from Adrian Flux & A-Plan, both of whom the extended family use for a number of Jap imports. Adrian Flux came in first at £265, and that's with a huge number of extras including like for like & unlimited mileage, you can also add more options like breakdown etc if required. We opted for the whole shooting match including full breakdown (inc' Homestart) & recovery, Key cover, extra legal cover, claims protection, euro cover, time unlimited courtesy car, and more, total £331.

So, my experiences over the last few days indicate that if you have a seriously modded Landy get yourself down to Adrian Flux. We have used them for several years, but of course we didn't know until we asked that they had a special Landy plan and someone who knows about the vehicles. I used their Thatcham office and spoke to Alec, should have known as they have specialist departments & staff for a number of odd vehicle types.

Strange as mine is lifted, has modded suspension, steering & diff guards, wheel spacers, cranked radius arms, cobra seats, harnesses not seatbelts etc etc and I've never had a problem with Lancaster; maybe they're upholding long-standing business but not taking on new, or maybe it's the height of that lift??
