Hi all. Ive posted this in the newbie section but feel I might have more luck here. Ive just traded in my 1997 323 coupe bmw for a 2000 1.8 petrol F.L 3 door and was wondering if the brakes are usually this bad? I know their not gonna be up to the beemers standard as they are disc front and drum rear but they feel really wooden and have nearly caught me out a couple of times and im thinking is there an upgrade or do I start with new pads, discs, and maybe shoes. Its got 90k on the clock and looks really tidy for its age. Will do the usual service as i dont know its history but is there anything I should be looking for? many thanks for any advice. cheers.

Sorry me again. Ive just managed to pull the rear handle off the back door as I didnt realise you had to press the fob button twice to unlock all the doors. lol. Any ideas where i can get another one cheap? maybe from a breaker or anyone selling one. Im in bristol. Many thanks.

You will notice a slight difference in acceleration as well  The brakes are OK if in good condition but models from 2001 have bigger vented front discs and bigger rear drums so that might be the way to go otherwise check that your current front discs are in good condition and rear drums correctly adjusted.

Best bet is a breaker or from ebay.

Thanks for the advice. Although from a standing start I have to admit the pull is really good for a little 1800 but might go down the route of making it a 2 wheel drive as i dont really want it for off roading but might get the winter out of the way first. I wasnt even sure these were 4x4 but can feel it now Ive driven it a bit more. you notice it more in slow corners. have had a look on flea bay and theyve got a couple of new ones but cheapest is over £100 delivered so it looks like a wander round the breakers is due.

Have noticed a grinding sound when going around corners and it feels a bit like the prop shaft. Is there a known fault with them? Feels like a wheel bearing going but I doubt that both sides would be going and I can feel it under the floor just to the right of the drivers seat. Have had a good push and pull of the wheels and no play. The tighter and quicker you take the corner the worse it becomes. Anyone got any ideas?
