Hi I'm looking to buy a Freelander. Obviously I've read a lot about head gasket problems - is this only a problem on the 1.8? Does the V6l have any problems I should look out for. I'm looking at one that has about 40k on the clock. Any advice would be hugely appreciated.

Not an expert on the V6, but yes the head gasket problem is associated with the 1.8, our friends have just had to have a complete new engine after the head gasket had been repaired before.

The only warning on the V6 would be fuel consumption and the ever increasing prices of petrol. 6 months ago I sold a BMW 325i sport with 50K on, FSH, sport leather, 18" wheels etc etc and lost a fortune as the market for big petrols has just taken a nose dive (could have cried). I personally would have the diesel but thats my opinion, as I like the drive of the new common rail diesels.

V6 is supposed to be a bit of an animal which certainly can't be said of the diesel or 1.8 having driven both.

Not as bad as the 1.8 but a few issues with h g think cam fowller problems but like Yella say,s Mark Sludge is the v6 man. . .;)

Thinking it might be a good idea to stick to the TD4. Now it's just finding the right one on budget! Cheers for your help

Just picked up the a TD4 on friday, giving it a few miles before getting one of Roverron's boxes.

You wont be disappointed with the diesel.

Wait till yer get yer box on it:D :D Bet it wont be far off the v6 (but ive never had a go sooo?)
Marksurry Might be along soon I bet he mentions his is for sale ( read all his other threads tho one carefull owner ,never off roaded honist)HEE HEE!
Sorry mark couldnt resist

The V6 performance will hammer any TD4 in a race, irespective of mods.

But the V6 does have head gasket trouble.

The rear head on the V6 is located very close to the bulk head and as a result after milage of about £50-60K the head gasket will go on the back head.

Avoid all petrol Freelanders. I have seen them many times fail.

Stick to the TD4 manual. It's the best buy.

Oh crap, I didn't see this thread :(
As mentioned above I am indeed a V6 owner and must say it is a beast of an engine (performance wise). It would kick any Freelanders arse in a race as I often do.
However, they do indeed suffer head gasket problems. I had both of mine done about 2k miles ago after she started puffing steam out the back. No damage to the engine though, just skimmed the heads and fitted new gaskets, new cam belts and tensioners. You don't want to know the cost!
As for fuel consumption, it's thirsty. But, considering the weight, 4 wheel drive and lack of aerodynamics it's no surprise I get 19-24 mpg.
Would I buy another V6 Freelander? Hell yeah! It's a load of fun, especially in the wet. I'm yet to be beaten off the lights ;)
And, I'd like to point out that some of the diesel engines are suffering head gasket failures now; so buying a diesel is no guarantee you won't be forking out for one.

Forgot to mention I'm selling my V6 Freelander. X reg, 40k miles, dam fast, recent new head gaskets and cam belts. It's in the "For Sale" section ;)

I want to take it off road but the wife said she'd cut my balls off if I did. Worried about damage she says. I only drove a Disco into the same tree 3 times on my off road day. It was VERY muddy and the stupid Disco didn't want to turn where the front wheels were pointing. BANG! Hello tree. No damage but kept rolling back into it trying to get out of the bog. Dam good fun :D
