Hi all.

I've just picked up a 2010 Freelander 2, 2.2 GS.

To cut a long story short, it sounded like the front N/S wheel bearing was on the way out.

Nothing below 25mph, but then a "rubbing" noise from what sounds like the front left, which increases in time with speed wheel speed.

Turn left, noise disappears. Driving straight, its there, but turn right, and it gets much louder. There's a vibration thats enough to rattle the dash board slightly in time with the noise. At times it almost feels like the sort of vibration you might get from a flat tyre......a rythtmic thumping in time with speed.

So I assumed front wheel bearing, which I replaced with a brand new one.

The sound and vibration is still there. Maybe a little better, but definitely noticeable, especially when steering to the right.

I did notice that when I changed the bearing, the drive shaft inside the inner CV boot, was able to pull a good 10cm out towards the outside of the car. Not sure if thats normal.

I also think it may be slightly better when braking.....still there, but slightly quieter.

I thought of maybe swapping the wheels over, to eliminate any tyre issues.

Has anyone got any ideas?

Thanks for your help.

Sounds like the driveshaft / CV joint is the culprit to me

An update.

Drove to work this morning, same as before. Go round a right hand bend, the rhythmic sound gets louder and can feel the vibration in the car. Straight, it's there, but no vibration. Left hand bend, noise disappears.

A wump-wump-wump noise that only happens a above 25/30mph. No difference when accelerating or breaking, purely speed and direction related.

This morning I jacked the front end up and span both wheels.

N/S with the brand new bearing is smooth and quiet. No vibration felt on the spring.

O/S, definite vibration through the spring, and sounds louder when spinning the wheel.

So, I'm going to change the O/S bearing as well, and go from there.

Ah ok, could be the bearing then

It could still be driveshaft......but I'll try and change the other bearing first.

Also noticed tonight, the N/S brake is much much hotter than the O/S brake........wondering if the caliper is sticking on. Will try and strip the caliper apart this week as well.

Well that could also be the culprit… you may well have a binding brake or warped disc - that would give you a noise like you describe as the disc rubs the pads on revolution

A seized caliper will cause vibration.
I'd not play with the calipers, they're cheap enough to be considered disposable.

As another update, the problem is now fixed!

It turned out to be the O/S wheel bearing.......it was completely shot.

Needless to say everything was seized solid.....but got there in the end.

Pressed out old bearing, fitted new OE bearing, out it all back together, and noise all gone.

Not sure if it's something specific to the Freelander, or 4x4's in general.......but the usual thing of the bad bearing being the one that makes a noise with load on isn't always true.

I even had a couple of mates sit in the passenger seat, and they were certain it was coming from the front left as well.

Maybe the vibration travelled across the axle??
