Hi all,

I'm new to owning a landy and also new to the forum, so bear with me; I've some #basicbitch questions.

1) It's an '89 90 with a 200 tdi engine swap in. I assume it has an R380 Disco box in as the gear lever is offset, back about 400mm :mad:. To fix this, from reading, i need to change the bell housing to a shorter one? I'm guessing mounting the engine closer to the front is not really an easy option?

2) Engine is solid and runs well, what first steps in giving it some general love and attention/overhauling to get the best out of it. I will be replacing all hoses as they are partly cracked and i alswyas like to do this out of habit.

3) I need a new exhaust, as only half of it exists! Might seem a stupid question but do i buy a 200 tdi exhaust to fit early 1990s discovery? Or do i buy an exhaust spec'd for the original 19J engine? Will i be expected to do some minor modifications to make this fit?

Thanks in advance for your help! <3

This could be a mare...but fixable.
The standard hoses and exhaust don't fit, some people buy the Steve Parker kits (Google them) to make the job easier, some bodge bits of anything to make hoses and exhausts and some do a good diy job like me.
Pics of your exhaust at the turbo end and your hoses will help us help you. Steve Parker bits are expensive btw.
Can't fit a shorter bell housing, you need a complete box in a nutshell plus other bits. Ashcroft gearboxes (iirc) do a conversion thing which may be an option for you (Google them too) which repositions the lever but I don't know much about that.
Moving the engine forward brings problems as well.

Oh...I assume it is a disco engine with the above?
Turbo is up near level with the rocker cover on defender, low down on the disco version.

Hey Flossie,

Thanks for your comments. I checked out Ashcroft- it's around £500 for a rebuilt gearbox which is a fair bit, and may be worth it in the long run, but I will explore other options too as the current gearbox is extremely sweet, I just don't like the position of the main shifter .

You are correct, it's a disco engine which is in great condition and pulls nicely.

For the exhaust I anticipate some modifications (Steve Parker ones are great but dollarrrr), which shouldn't be a problem as this girl can weld :D I currently only have a front section that terminates under the driver's cab requiring windows open to drive without being gassed out!

I am currently working abroad but will be back in a few weeks to strip her clothes off and get stuck in :p
