New To The World Of The Landrover Help Please

hi everyone,ive just bought my 1st landrover 90,it is a 1988 e reg 2.5td,i have some issues i could do with some advice on please..
1)on 1st start up it throws out a lot of white smoke this dissappears after a few mins,but if you leave the car for 30 mins or so and start again you get another lot of smoke but not as bad,any ideas???
2)i cannot get the drivers seat to a position that is comfortable for me the back simply wont go back far enough,is there a way of cutting the rear panel behind the seat?
3)how easy is it to fit some sports seats
any help would be great as this is all new to me and im sure i will be posting lots of threads..many thanks

Yes, you can get a bulkhead removal bar, the one from MUD UK is reasonably cheap and easy to fit.

There are various options for seats, new and second-hand from scrap vehicles. I fitted ones from a Subaru Impreza in mine, a good deal further back than standard. Withe a smaller steering wheel, it makes it very comfortable for me (I'm 6'4" and 16 st).

Your engine probably is letting oil drip into the cylinders through the valve guides while it's parked up, though some of the smoke is caused bu excess fuel being thrown in by the cold start mechanism on the injector pump. So long as it clears reasonably quickly I wouldn't worry about it. You can get a kit to remove the tub bulkhead and replace it with a bar giving you a bit more room to move the seat back but you won't be able to change to a truck cab at a later date. Plus if you push it too far back you won't be able to see out of the side windows. tbh unless you're very very tall or very very fat I wouldn't bother, you'll get used to the driving position. Do a search on here for different seats people have fitted, but I reckon you can't go far wrong with the standard ones meself.

i agree with hughesy regarding the seats, mine has standard seats fitted and im 6'1 and dont have any troubles with it even on long journeys.

funny thing is if someone else is drivin and im the passenger in my 90 that is when i start to notice the lack of legroom, in the passenger seat~!

I'm 6'4" and don't have any probs with the standard set up. It is wierd like chris says there seems to be less room in the passenger side

I fitted a pair of recaro's from a capri 280 wi seats in normal position without movin them back and they are well comfy and im 6'2

Is that not cos you can actually put your legs right out in the passenger side as opposed to having them poised above the pedals?

I've got Trewies owld seats an there int owt wrong with them, I just pressure wash em off when they get too muddy. Try moving the seat forwards so the back can be tilted further back, but most of all it int a posh sallooooon car so don't expect to much from yer lumbar support.

Ey an Trewie you've posted that pic of yer steering column before, whats the collar type thing between the wheel an the plasticyshroudy bit?

It's the hub adaptor to allow the steering wheel to fit on the landy column. he's got one of those aftermarket steering wheels fitted. yer have to buy a vehicle specific centre boss for em.

partially correct

The hub adaptor ("boss") came with a black plastic sleeve that is a push fit over the boss and fills tha gap between the boss and the shroud that covers the switchgear. I had to shorten the sleeve a bit and also file a bit off the shroud to stop it rubbing though.
I also had to drill and tap the bottom end of the boss and screw on a small piece of steel strip (bent into a "U" shape) to operate the self-cancelling function of the indicators.

If you don't want to remove the rear baulkhead you could buy a pair seat rails from Mud Stuff which will allow you to move your seat further back by approx 2". I'm 6.3" and works great for me.
