New to the scene

Hey folks.

I'm new to the landrover scene, but I've been wanting one since I can remember. Main problem I know what looks good, but what landy performs & wont give me massive grief in the long run.

I was told by an enthusiast that anything 200 TDi is kick arse. Does this cover all landrover or just a spacific model?

Preferrably I'd have a Defender, cus they're awesome! But I couldnt afford much more than a grand at the moment so I'm waiting.

What can you guys tell me as I'm really really new to this. Plus I'd like to learn how to look after it myself? Any advice on what is the best landy to work on for a beginner engineer?

200 and 300Tdi engines were fitted to both the Defender and Discovery and were probably the best engines Land Rover ever made.

If you are on a budget, keep your eyes open for a nice Disco. I saw a road-used, one lady owner N-reg Tdi auto, with all the trimmings for £2,000 ono. I reckon an envelope stuffed with £1500 would have given me the keys.

awesome! I could probably scrounge up that kind of money in a year or so. major probelm there is automatic though

I delivery drive for ASDA outside of being a student, the Mercedese sprinter van's are automatic and have no reponse at all.

I'll do alittle more research into 200 & 300 Tdi. You say road used, does that mean that i'd have to do extra stuff with it to make it off road usable?

I can sympathise, I'm not really an "auto person" and have always prefered manuals. At work, some of our A&E ambulance fleet are Merc Sprinter automatics and we have been trained to use them almost solely in "manual" mode for safety/stability reasons. Driven right, there's not much difference in overall performance for whjat we do.

Any Land ROver product can be taken straight from the show room and used off road with no modification. In fact, that way is quite good fun. As people develop their own style and concentrate on what they like to do (offroad vs greenlaning vs trialling vs winch challenge competition, etc.) there are bits and bobs that you add to your Christmas list!
