Hello Everyone. I have owned my 1988 90 tdi for about 25 years. Live in Normandy, France and have used it for years restoring and hauling around stuff but have never been mechanically talented. Local small garage just closed and I have been asking general questions on google/You Tube when I found your site. Father and two brothers all loved restoring old vehicles but I had ''better things to do;" severely paying for it now....So, either I will continue posing dumb questions, hoping to be able to accomplish the strict minimum or else.....would anyone know a good Landrover Mechanic in my neighborhood in Normandy, lol....cheers

Hello and welcome to landy zone. You can ask all the questions.you like and you'll get some.good answers unless you ask them in the Anything Goes part of the site. Good luck finding a.good landy mechanic in Normandy, there are pretty rare in UK nowadays

Need my son home from university, lol. My Landy is the standard green 90; no frills, a roof rack that I bought that isn't from Landrover, but has always worked for hauling lumber. Need to say, mine is like a "covered" pickup; no seats in back; great for sand, stone, and firewood and (of course,) our departed Lab loved the space as well...Thanks again. Oh yes we're in Normandy(big place,) near here:https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haras_national_du_Pin...

Welcome to landyzone fireplace for retired duffers with nasal dandruff in bath chairs.

NO(I don't have a TDI,) but a Turbo Diesel. I believe there's a big difference...sorry

Well, I am far from an expert, but I thought, the "turbo diesel", at least here in France, was the model(s) 90/110, year 88 and 89. The Tdi(much improved,) started in 1991. https://www.land-service.com/fr/13-defender-90-1983-2016 I buy my parts here...Again, I am no mechanic and just love my Landrover without knowing a great deal about it(kind of like women.)
In the UK, 2.5 Turbodiesels were introduced in Ninety/One Ten in 1985, I think, as a stopgap until the Tdi was ready.
Tdi were used in Discoveries from the beginning of Discoveries, which I think was in 1988, although a Disco person (not John Travolta), may correct me on that.
The new Defenders, as the coil spring box body vehicles were called, were sold in the UK from what is called, " Model Year 1990".
Model Year referring to September the 1st, which is when the new registration plates were released in Britain each year at that time.

You are right, there is very little similarity between an indirect injection 2.5TD, and a direct injection intercooled 2.5 Tdi.

I don't know how any of that translates to what went on in France.

Welcome/Bienvenu to LZ! :)

Not a problem to me, I am Canadian, although a dual national now, I have lived in the UK for a long time.

There are quite a few Americans on the forum. Going to tag @Western Slope Rover and @JUKE179r , so they can greet you properly with corn dogs, and grits, and stuff like that! :D

Welcome to the place where folks with no common sense about automobiles go for solace.

Here at this side of the channel our chief moderator Arnold Bogworth have organised a partnership with your French version of landyzone Zonal du Landy. Here off the press a new training poster.

Thank you all. Wife's French, son Franco-American. Hitch hiked then drove through British Colombia from Bay Area Cal. to Alaska to fish commercially, summers, in 69-70; had a great time. Been living here in France over 35 years. Really only miss wilderness, hunting and fishing back in N. America. Last time home(in 89,) woman I was dating asked to come along. "Can you fly fish?" I think she thought I was going to LA or San Francisco, big hotels, etc....lol. Oh yes, also miss good Mexican Food...cheers...rr
