Hello All

Ive got a 2003 52 plate 1.8 Freelander, Epsom Green, black leather & Alcantara, very nice. I have a couple of qustions

When the car is in neutral & I rev the engine I can hear gargling behind the dash. Is this air in the system?

Ive got a key, which looks like an allen key about 75 mm long & 3mm in diameter, & it says Land Rover on it. What is it for?

Thanks

Tess

Hi ya Tess
Welcome to the madhouse. Hope ya like ya new car.

I belive the Allen key you have got is the emergency sun roof key.It is to allow you to manually wind open/shut the sun roof in the event of electrical failure. I believe it is mentioned in the handbook.

The gargling/slushing noise behind the dash is the heater matrix which as air in it,it is important to get this sorted by bleeding the system using the vents on the hose`s (refer to manual),make sure you are not loseing any coolent as you could end up with a costly repair(ie-head gasket)so don`t keep driving around hopeing it will fix it self,if you have any dout get expert advise, sorry if this sounds blunt and direct

Hi Smythe

Ive just looked at the bleed procedure on the cd I bought, & it says if an air lock is present in the heater matrix take off the expansion tank cap & remove the bled screw in the heater return hose to let the air out. Is it that easy?

Air in the water system, equals possibly another knackered Freelander, free advice sell it, like I did mine cos they are S H one T

Hi Mad Hat Man

I loosened the bleed screw in the heater pipe & coolant came out but couldn,t manage to get to the screw in the pipe to the radiator. When I revved the engine after I had done it the slushing was a bit quieter. I will have another go at the other screw later & let you know how I have gone on. I had the car serviced & mentioned the head gasket problem & the garage did a "block test" & said the head gasket was fine & they let the car idle for 30 mins & the temp guage went to half way & stayed there. I will let you know how I go on later.

Thanks

Tess

Were you losing coolant at any stage? If level is normal then nout to worry about. Air locks can happen in colder weather with 'contraction' of coolant. Sometimes valve in coolant cap is faulty, about £3 to replace cap.

Might need several more bleeds. Lift the heater matrix hose so the bleed valve is at the highest point, sometimes the hoses sag a bit.
