HI I'm Mickey

Sorry not to introduce myself, didn't see this bit of the Forum when asking questions.

Briefly, son and I bought a Defender 200tdi 110 about 18 months ago. Sorry you landylovers, what a pile of ***. Love driving it, but in 18 months it's been roadworthy for about 12 weeks !

Moral don't buy if you don't know what you're doing. The Landy has a knack of waiting for you to struggle manfully to solve one problem before slinging another even weirder problem at you.

In even succession: the cyl head gasket went ( £400 !) the bulkhead started crumbling in our hands ( £400 - still not fitted, that will cost another £1000 ) the glowplugs, washers, various lights failed, 2 new batteries were bought, the gearbox committed suicide on the M25 ( £85 for an ebay replacement + £250 fitting ), and now there's a short somewhere in the handbrake, for which I fitted a new alternator ( unnecessarily ), so I still can't use the car. As I work on it in the drive in daylight and do have another life, each one of these items takes weeks to resolve ! Oh, and the roof leaks, not just drops, but LITRES !

My son's given up. He's in a Shogun, which starts and drives and gets him places. How boring !

I'm made of sterner stuff, but by golly have I been sorely tested ! I'm determined not to let the old thing die, but I seriously wonder if I'll ever get more than a consecutive 7 days of untroubled motoring out of it ?

Thanks for reading this. It makes me feel better just to write it all down !

it all depends how well looked after it was before you got it and how well you checked it out before parting wit de cash. any car will fall to bits if its not taken care of.
have alook at the age of some of the series landies on here and you'll see what i mean.

Eyup MickeyP,
Stick with it chap. Slobs right regarding the age of some Landys on here, mines a 1959, maintenance is like painting the Forth Bridge, theres always summat to do and it seems endless.
Welcome to the forum mate.

Regards WP.

Just to round this off, the previous owner showed me bills for £4000 he had spent on the car, including a replacement transfer box and a lot of work on the suspension, but, yes, basically it had been very poorly looked after. Just beats me though how we British seem to design great cars and assemble them with rubbish components ! As someone else said in another thread, you can open the doorlocks with a key fob !

It's not as though new Defenders were or are cheap !
