New member with big wiring problem

It's a long story but the short form is that the battery in my series 3 exploded (I now realise that the alternator was pushing out 18 volts!). I replaced said alternator and (obviously) battery and after sorting out blown fuses and bulbs got everything working - I thought. Went out for a short test run - loads of smoke from under bonnet - burnt out wiring loom. Can I get a replacement loom and could a bloke like myself (capable but no expert) fit it? Is it even worth contemplating?
Any suggestions welcome.
