In the UK, thankfully.
I was looking on DVLA website and have just discovered that if you own a vehicle it must be insured at all times. Exceptions are if it is SORNed or off road prior to SORN legislation in 1998. So if you have a Landrover on the road for part of the year, cancel the insurance but let the tax run its course, you could be fined as it must be SORNed at the same time as insurance is cancelled. Thats going to catch a lot of Landy owners out, especially classic motors where its tax free but still taxed and off road:eek::eek::eek::eek:. FFS !

Since start of year - they have the right to impound the vehicle and I believe that includes vehicles not on the road.

Talk to your insurer. Some will do short term, theft only policy for this and others will suspend your cover whilst the vehicle is off the road. Having insurance but having it suspended really confuses the issue.

Don't ask me for details, companies etc. this is courtesy of my sister who works in insurance, has no money and is always looking for wrinkles to keep one of her 4x4s on the road to tow her horse box. The contents of the box is why she's never got any money!
