Hi,

Ive put everything onto 1 thread, so ive bought another series 3 landy after selling the last one some years back.

Ive taken a punt as ive not seen it, but its got a ticket till next March and has ive asked plenty of questions about the problem spots, also the seller has great feedback to hopefully will be lucky.

Fully running, last advisories were on play on the front prop shaft and small oil leak.

I conned the mrs into letting me have another one as were renovating our house and needed a van.. i convinced her a landy would be better.

Plus only paid £900 so hopefully wont get bitten to bad.

OK... so the bits i need to tackle... and welcome advice as im pretty cluseless... all i did to the last one as paint it :)

*Prop shaft play on the front UJ .. do i just replace?
* Servicing it
*Has no door lock on the drivers door... at all... so will buy another.
* The choke has been modified to work off the heater control slide???? me and the seller are not sure why?... any thoughts? also do i just buy another cable.
* The heater and the fan dont work ... any advice on the first thing to check?
*Then im gonna paint it ... its currently red with a black roof, im gonna paint it marine blue and sandstone roof and sides.... anyone know the RAL numbers please?
*I'm gonna rust proof with the hammerits/wax oil stuff all over the chassis.
* Also sppedo isnt working? .. cable?

So plenty to get going, i will post up some pics and keep the thread going... any advice on the first things I should be checking etc? any advice appreciated.

Cheers :)

A search would have answered a number of those questions for you....

Heater - Probably bad connections. Take off and clean and take it from there. It can be the switch, but more often its the contacts on the connections.
Speedo - Replace cable first. It come from the back of the gearbox and goes through a grommet onto the back of the speedo. I've still got to do mine, but I'm told its a simple job. Cable is only a tenner too. If it aint the cable, its probably the speedo drive or the guage.

Was it Marine blue originally? I would only repaint it back to its standard colour, but that is just me.

Best of luck.

These are pretty easy, the Land Rover workshop manual tells you how to do it. You need a strong vice (I broke mine) and a big hammer. You take out the circlips hit it HARD to force the bearing cups out then press it back together in a vice, making sure everything is straight. Took me about an hour and a broken vice!

* Servicing it
Yes, good idea, all fluids , at the very least, you never know what's in there.

Probably the choke cable broke/got stuck/wouldn't stay put so they borrowed that one.

* The heater and the fan dont work ... any advice on the first thing to check?
Check water levels first, remove rad cap when cold, if low the heater gets exposed first as its higher than the engine
Check the heater valve where the choke cable went to?, it might be jammed onto cold...

Check wiring use a lamp to see if electric getting to fan
Take fan out (a pig of a job, easiest if you take wing off but possible without) and check its probably ****ed up like mine was. I ended up fitting a defender fan for a bit more flow. Required a bit of modding, ask me if you're interested and I'll dig out pictures.

Have fun, if you rust proof make sure you clean all the old paint off, nowt worse than covering the problem up!

Speaking of fans, me and my dad were tracing wires around the 88 (what a job, everything was the wrong colour) and found a nice kenlow on the front, didn't even know I had one;)

I also didn't think you could have one as well as the engine driven one:confused:

I thought it was overpriced at its original and wouldn't have touched it as I hated the look of it plus it just didn't seem quite right to me, then again I might have just been being over critical

HAHA .. I did ask... yeah I hate the look to and will be going original. as for the price not sure, seen some bad looking series 3 go for big money and they dont have an MOT.
