Hi all
I have searched the forums but haven't found a problem that matches mine, so here goes.
I have a 2000MY Freelander TD4. Had a new clutch, slave & master cylinders replaced by LR in November 2006, clutch plate only replaced whilst housing was off for 'futureproofing' as both cylinders failed rather than clutch itself failing.
However, clutch had started slipping a month ago, so my local garage replaced clutch plate and slave cylinder (I've been driving cars for 30 years and never had a clutch go yet, so not very impressed here!). Clutch is working fine, but the bite point is literally just off the floor, in fact, when warm and in traffic, even with the pedal ground into the carpet, car starts to move when I start to push it into gear. I took it back for the garage to look at, they told me there was no way to bleed the system and there was nothing they could do, just drive it for a month and then go back if still not right, as apparently this is common in Freelanders and as the clutch wears the bite point gets higher? It seems to be better when cold, or if the clutch has not been used for a while (eg long motorway hauls).
My garage has been excellent over the years, but now I'm not sure if I'm being spun a line, or maybe the master cylinder should also have been changed (again!), I'm at a loss here. No fluid loss anywhere, btw. Gear changes are smooth enough, as long as I make sure pedal is well to the floor, and distance from bite to engaged is very small, which makes it a lot better to drive than it had been for years.
Any comments would be gratefully received, just to arm me for when I go back to the garage!
Thanks
John
