Just got my disco today and last years MOT had advisories on the brakes. I figure that new discs and pads all round are in order.
I bought the disco to tow a caravan so what do you guys recommend disk wise? I am thinking X Drilled and grooved rather than the solid type so any particular brands I should look at?
Also there was an advisory on the service brake, is that the hand brake?????
 
Why not just use the original discs? They work perfectly well and unless you are overheating the discs to the point you get brake fade, then drilled or vented discs will make no difference. As for pads, I find EBC give the best balance of performance & longevity. The thing to remember is that tyres make a much bigger difference to braking performance than different discs or pads.

Oh, the service brake is the main foot operated brake. The parking brake is the handbrake.
 
Thanks for that. I was just thinking that whilst I was replacing them I'd go for uprated on the front as there is little diference in price. My Disco and van will have nearly a 4 ton weight hence my thinking up rated brakes, and obviously it needs to be done soon rather than wait till nest MOT in October.
 
You don't really need uprated brakes, they won't stop you any quicker than standard ones on the same tyres. If you do a lot of towing, I would suggest making sure your caravan brakes are in top condition and fit you Disco with a set of good quality road tyres.
 
Thanks for the advice, standards it is then. The caravan is brand new and has to be serviced every year so brakes won't be a problem.

Best thing I did for caravanning, although it was done for off-roading really, was to fit braided stainless brake lines .. and change the brake fluid completely for new .. :)

The difference in 'feel' with the new lines is astounding.
 
An easy upgrade for a Disco is to fit calipers from a 110 to the front. Just make sure you get a pair to match ie vented or non vented and 1 or 2 brake hoses. The bolt holes are the same, it is just larger with bigger pads so an increase in the surface friction area therefore stops you quicker . New disks , larger calipers and pads will make a differance.
