It's taken over 30 years of Landrover driving to join a group/club/forum but here I am.
I first drove a LR in the middle east in '76 and have owned them for many years. I also drove Landrovers off road (jungle, desert and snow) during a military period so I have done a few miles in some fairly dodgy examples!
My latest pair are a 2007 Disco 3 and a 2002 Defender Td5 90 hard top. The Disco is 'sweet' and will be given a good leaving alone but the 90 is fairly standard and begging to be accessorised slightly. I don't believe in mucking a good design about too much but a snorkel, a set of winter/off road wheels and a pair of fold up seats for the back will be a start (Is it legal to carry a passenger without seats?).
The Defender is new to me so I'm keen to play. I have had Discos for many years with a Disco Td5 prior to the Disco 3 but I also had a CSW110 300 Tdi before I ran out of parking space!
I live in Luton and around 10 years ago went off roading with the Beds, Herts and Cambs LR owners club. I loved it but haven't been back since. I wonder if they will still have me?!

Hi Dug welcome to Loony zone.:welcome2: Serving soldier myself, this site requires a GSOH and athick skin. But you will find a site full of realy good folks who love landies and a good laugh:D There are plenty of technical minded folks more than happy to give you practical advce and even more people only too happy to give you some very impractical advice:eek:
 
I've just found out myself that there are actually other Land Rover forums, not just this one.
It seems that the LZ is deemed crude, pedantic, childish and vulgar by those at the more civilized sites.

Just giving you fair warning. I'd leave it myself but it's the only time in my life that I've been accepted by a group of any sort, even if it is as one of the token septics. :D

How could I leave? It was the warmest of welcomes I was given upon my arrival here.

I believe my first contacts here were with Fanny, storm99 and Nigbo, so you can imagine.

Although they have continued the fellowship, they needn't.They had at me at "F**k of ya big arsed, yellow toothed, banjo playin' septic."

I'm filling up already guys! What a lovely reception! I work in civvy land now but when I left, the QMS let me keep the sense of humour, the thick skin and my moustache so I'm sorted!! Oh! And crude, pedantic, childish and vulgar matches the first line of my CV so I should be ok!
Snaggers. Dont you get to play with a real 4x4? A horse I mean! Or have I got the badge wrong? So much has changed since I left.

Hiya,

Come have a look at Hertfordshire Lanes thread in the greenlane section. Thats where we chat alot. Most of us although it says Herts are actually based in Luton.

P.S we hold a monthly pub meet in Dunstable the white lion that used to be the Chalk hill pub from 7.30 every first Wednesday of the month.

I'm Jai I will be at the pub tomorrow great of you can make it if not another time. but there is plenty of us around and a few legal rights of way not far heading towards Hitchen thats most pleasant to drive if you ever fancy it.

We go from very tame greenlaning which is always nice to get out, to full blown trials and winch comps we're not a club as such just a group of people that gather and chat about LR's and stuff. No membership fee just a friendly group of people.

Thanks for the warm contact Jai. Tomorrow may be a bit soon as my wife is a midwife at the L&D and is on a night shift and escape might be a bit awkward!
My defender is fairly standard so might not be up to your level of off-roading yet but my Disco did well a few years ago so I am interested in having a play soon. I'm watching a set of wheels/tyres on e-bay and will let you know how it went.

Yay!! Jai's one of the great bunch I mentioned so hope you get a chance to go out and play. You'll be fine in either vehicle - seriously, these guys will see you alright (and if they can put up with me which they did for many years ...........:rolleyes:).

Yes I can picture certain areas of good ol' Luton town right now - Dad was a copper in Luton for 30 years and some things you just don't forget!

No problem Nick,

I understand my otherhalf is a nurse at the L&D working hours isn't the best part of the job for sure!

Standard or a fully kitted motor is no worries to us. Only modification over standard that we ask for if we're going out would be a single front tow point or ideally 2. The easiest way is with jate rings on a 90 same as all the mil spec defenders had roughly £25 a pair and a rear tow point a ball is fine.

We have a kind of understanding between our main lot of people. It sounds a bit septic tank but nobody gets left behind. If somone gets stuck or breaks down we do our upmost to get them out safe and home I recall several 3am recoveries mainly from members that have gone off alone and got it wrong.

We're here to help you get more involved should you need any parts or anything shout some members have plenty of new bits stashed away and can usually get you out of trouble if need be.

I can recall being on a lane for nearly 20 hours doing a recovery........ That one was an arse! got some beating to do better than that one :D
 
Kazzi I know your based in luton but have you driven through Whetstone high street this year? Seen a Landy lookd an awful lot like yours going past. Taking for granted that the series 111 in the picture is still yours:tea:
