Popped a hole in the radiator of my 6 potter during the week

Was quoted £117.50 for a recore by a local Rad specialist - BUT Paddocks have a new one for £70 - how does that work then :confused: - know where i'm going :p
 
it works by convection and radiation.
the energy that is generated by the engine that doesn't go into making the pistons go up and down is heat energy. too much of this is bad for your engine so what you have is a water jacket surrounding the hottest parts of your engine. in this jacket there is water. the heat transfers by conduction into the water and through a process of thermal dynamics and the water pump the hot water is taken from the engine and then goes through the radiator. now comes the really good bit. cold air is forced through the radiator by the movement of the vehicle through the air, there is also a fan used to draw air through the radiator so even when you are not moving you still get air flowing through the radiator.
the radiator has a number of water ways in it and these water ways have fins on them. so with the air rushing past the fins the heat that has conducted itself from the water into the metal of the fins via the radiator core is taken away leaving cooler water to recirulate back to the engine.
there are a number of variation on this simple but effective idea these include but are not limited to electric fans and a smaller radiator in the vehicle cab that can be used as a heater ( except the one in series landrovers)

simple really, i'm surprised you didn't know
 
if yer hole ain't too big you can bung some araldite over it. when i was in australia i hit a washout in me van and the engine and box jumped forward stuffing the fan through the rad, leaving a hole about 4" by 1/4" quick mix up of araldite and it was good to go in 30mins. was still like that when i sold it some 4000 miles later.
 
yehh Slob - had the same idea - pulled rad out - squashed damaged fins flat with pliers ( 3 core rad so middle ones were a job to get at ) and applied coat of superglue on outside of fins/ radweld on inside.

Seems watertight at moment and should last until I can get myself off to Matlock to replace it

if a job ain't worth bodging it's not worth doing :)

Hmmmmmmm !!! my series 2A has the flat type of heater matrix and it works fine when it's properly bled of all air

It even ( hold onto something solid Slob because this may be tooooooo much of a shock to you ) DEMISTS the windscreen :eek:

LOL - yeh ok cos you are obviously so much better at it than me :D

actually it was a little fiberoonie that it demist's - it sort of moves the mist around the screen - but it does blow HOT air which suprised me
 
brings back memories of my first mini. the heater was a 14 quid optional extra!
 
I found the original reciept for my first mini from when it was bought new, it was getting on a bit when I bought it, any how I'm sure the passenger seat and wing mirror were extras as well as the heater.
 
you could have stuck another engine/box in the back like that one they have at beaulie. then you would another dizzy for the other glove. or you could buy a gaylander and some ky
 
in the 70's I had a HB Viva ( thats a car not a pencil B4 anyone comments ) who's wings were held on by lashings of cellotape , the horn used to go off in time to the indicators and the exhaust back box was a length of scaffolding pipe.
Obviously it provideda good background in ' bodging ' so I can now keep a landy running :)
