my series 3 is still smoking after spending the best part of £350 on the engine ive run out of idea's, ive had the injectors reconditioned, a new fuel pump all the oil leaks sorted so which is the best, easy'st and cheapest have my current engine rebuilt of doining an engine change

There's a good post somewhere by CharlesY which goes into a lot of detail about adjusting the fuel timing on a SIII. Worth a search and read, he talks sense and makes sense.

It certainly improved my SIII smoking, though you'll never eliminate it altogether. Part and parcel of owning such a - ahem - cherished vehicle.

Hi, Have reconditioned a perkins before, what is the model No? the 4203 was a favourite a few years ago, Black smoke is unburned fuel, the fuel pump can be set at lower limits, I have noticed too far advanced timing can cause black smoke and too small valve clearances, overall they are not an efficient engine, is it black or blue smoke?
 
thought the 4203 was a bigger 3.0 litre perkins engine not like the silky smooth 2.25 deisel fitted as standard in series 3s
 
There are 2 common types of perkins engine fitted to landys and rangies, the first one is a perkins 4203(4203 denotes 4 cylinder 203 cubic inches)which is an engine with a metric capacity of 3.3 litres - a good strong engine yet a little under-refined will pull a house down but noisy and not for long journeys normally found in series vehicles occasionally in range rovers, the other type is a perkins 4236 of 3.8 litres. Some peeps believe this is one of the best rangie conversions, the engines are bomb proof very solid and strong they also do a turbo version of this power unit.
