Hi to all..I ma new to the site and need some mechanical advice on the 00 freelander I have just bought. Can anyone help?..??:)....
 
HI, thanx for the reply. I thought this would be the best place to find out. I have a 00 freelander, when I put it in reverse and turn full lock it feels like the brakes have jammed on. The guy I bought it from said it has always done that in all the 5 years he owned it but it dunt feel right to me... What do you think it could be?????
 
Hi Thanx for your reply, It does help as i thought there was a problem. Is there something I can do to grease it or something? I made a bit of a mistake when i bought the car, i miss judged the timing belt service interval. it has 52k on the clock, i thought it would be good for another 20k. i got the miles mixed up with the petrol version so it now needs a cam belt. i think it should be done around 48k is that right? been quoted £750 from the dealer, surley it can't be that big a job?? any advice would be welcome....
 
You made a better judgment with the diesel! and 52 k is nothing .
As far as greasing the drive train..no. it wouldnt help.
And im not sure of the price to fit a timing belt but if the car has a full history it might already have been done.
if not just take it to a reputable garage...not the main dealers, as you will be paying through the nose for it.

Should be no where near that amount. £300 max, the belt is around £20, rest is labour, you dont have to replace the tensioner, some peeps do as a matter of course. You could also do the power steering and alternator auxillary belts at the same time, these are less than £10 each

Timing belt is straight forward, basic tools required, 8mm, 10mm, 22mm sockets and long extension bar, a few specialist ones for locking the flywheel and locking the twin cams, these can be fabricated.

We'll take you through it or buy a haynes, the tools and a set of overalls, plus you'll have change out of the £750 to take the family on holiday for a week
 
Camshaft timing belt can be had for a tenner on Ebay. The actual process of changing it is straightforward, if a little cramped in the engine bay. Just make sure the markers are all lined up and you should be fine.

As regards the drive train, yes they do seem very heavy. I had a V8 Discovery before the Hippo and the latter seems much more noticeable.
 
Just wanted to say thanks for all the advice you peeps have given. I am a new comer to the site and I have found it useful already. You peeps really know your stuff.

I managed to find a garage that will do the belt for under 300 quid, not sure if it included the FIP tho I will have to check when I take it in.

Thanks again for all your feed back, I will be a regular vistor to this site now.
