hello all,

i was hopeing one of you might have acces to and could point me to or
send me
an expanded view of the fron drive axle assebly, mainly the
differential.
my 4wd will not engage, the actuator works, but power never gets to
the front wheels. the transfer case seems to be working propoerly, as
the axle from the transfer case to the front diff engages. Also any
one with experiance on this problem and can give some advice on
possible causes would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

PS, any technical manual recomendation for the 4wd system on these
trucks would be also much apreciated.

Are you sure it works enough to engage the axle? the thermal OE design
blows... the 98+ electromechanical actuator can be retrofitted and it
100X better (I have one in my 88 K2500). does your 4wd light come on?.

pull your actuator out of the axle and use a 1" dowel about a foot
long to push the plunger in to engage the axle. if it doesn't engage
smoothly, or not at all, the axle assy is in need of serious repair.

99% of the time it's the actuator has failed. the other 1% is people
yanking the lever with the rear wheels spinning at 40MPH and breaking
the xfer case chain.

thx for the info, well, the actuator is brand spanking new...
to what lenght shoudl the actuator go to when extended.

i have tried manualy engageing the axle as discibed, and no success.
no indicator light, and little movment. pushing as hard as i can ( and
im a pretty big guy) i can only get the plunger to move 1/4 - 1/2
(rough estimate).

unfortunatly with my luck, i wouldnt be suprised if the axle was
pretty well screwd up... the transmission died on me the second day i
had the truck ><

once again, thank you.

it should be a little more than an inch or so.

IIRC, t should move in about an inch with about 10 lbs of force. it
sounds like the CAD splines are pretty well screwed. you might want
to go on a salvage yard search for a better axle, as I've heard they
kind of suck to work on.

salvage yard for 4x4 ?
