Sorry for the info requests but going to try and sort a bunch of stuff in the next week.

I have some grease leaking from the seal on the inner side of the wheel swivel thingy. It "looks" like its CV joint grease. Whats the name of the seal there and is it best to replace it? Any help at all would be much appreciated.

Also.....

I sometimes find first into second gear can be a little "difficult" and a bit of a crunch, other times its fine. Any thoughts what I should look at?

Next thing is gear box and diff oils. How much and what type do I need for both?

Its a 1996 300TDI.

Thanks in advance.

I have one you can have if you want it (i'm in London)- cost me £8 mind you and never fitted it after filling up with oneshot - just could not be arsed to do the work to change the seal as it involves breaking the axel joint (which can be a pig to do), when just filling up with oneshot grease did the job just as well. ????????However if its a 1996 model should it not have this in already?????? The best option if if continues to leak is just to keep topping it up unless you like awful jobs! :D

Thanks for the offer. I have ordered a new one shot grease and will just clean up the seal and see if I can hammer any bits flat if needed.

If you are going to strip it you may as well replace the seals as thats what is likely to be leaking? A mate sorted mine and it was a small leak... he didn't strip it right down, just drained it and replaced with one shot. No problems since... not ideal but did the job.
