I am so new to Land Rovers, always loved them, always wished I owned one, but never got round to it, mainly down to cost, and availability, but also because I have never had the space to restore one, and even now this will be a challenge as I will explain further down.

I am after ADVICE.... and as you read on I hope that a few of you lot out there who are more landy-savie than I will be able to point me in the right direction every now and then...

First off me! I'm a biker, always hated cars, all the cars I have ever bought cost less than £100, and I never serviced or looked after then, I just would drive them till something terminal happened and then swapped them for another, very easy over here (Isle of Man) as we have no MOT to bother us...

This said I can strip down a bikes engine and gearbox and rebuild then with my eyes closed, OK, well maybe not with my eyes closed but I am certainly above average when it comes to maintaining Bikes, their engines, and all the other stuff bolted on to them. So Mechanically I feel I am OK, and although a 2 Tonne Land Rover is slightly larger than a Yamaha R1 I am not afraid of getting my hands dirty and working on anything under the shell!

As for the Car itself, I just managed to pick up a Defender 110 200Tdi 1991 Ex-Army / Electricity Board Landy that was sitting in a Farmers drive and not been used for nearly 2 years.

Cost of the car: £400

My thoughts are this:

It’s in OK condition, it needs a Bulkhead, and possibly the Chassis as well, Doors are shot and there are a few other nice patches of rust, but then what do you expect for a car left out in the Manx weather!

The Engine looks sweet, I have seen a lot dirtier ones, and even though we needed to replace the battery, it started on the second go, and runs sweet.

It has a Built in 5 KvA 21 Amp 240V Generator built-in running off the engine, I know that this seems a little stupid to many but for me this is a real bonus as I want the car for Amateur Radio use, i.e, when it is finished, it will hopefully have a Heavy Duty Roof Rack fitted with a 30ft Windup Tennamast on top for the times that I want to go up the mountain to operate.

Although the seats are passable, they do need to be replaced or repaired, but there seems to be quite a few nice places that I have seen that produce some very sexy looking descent seats in nice leather for these.

So I think as a Donor vehicle this is quite nice, and it hopefully will not kill me in the process.

The Aim of the project!

To Strip the beast down to the chassis and then check out the running gear and replace anything that needs it, and at the least restore anything I feel that I can.

Sand Blast EVERYTHING Metal! Sounds a bit extreme, but we have a rather large sand blaster that I purchased to do the outside of the house, so this will find another use soon as I want the car to be as cosmetically sweet as I can make it, I used to spray so the paintwork will not be an issue for me.

As for the insides of the car, I hope to find a good alternative to the basic layout! I am looking at matching leather seats and door panels, Sound Proofing the entire vehicle, and good carpets or rubber matting etc. I would like to clean up the Dashboard a bit, and hopefully move the Generator panel from the dash to the rear of the car somehow. I also want to revamp the rear of the car, mayby find a way to have a removeable desk on one side of the rear, and nice removable chair to operate radio from, meaning that all the stuff can be removed when I need to cart stuff around.

The front seating is very basic and middle front seat needs to be removed and a nice cubby box installed which will match with the rest of the interior, and as for the rear (middle seats) I hope that I can replace the standard seats with just 2 seats similar to what will be in the front and then I may be able to fit another center console in there.

So that is the project, and yes to land Rovers I am a complete novice, but I am hoping that a few nice people here will be able to guide me through the next few years of this rebuild!.

For now….

Looks good! They are a great project vehice. Couple of tips: buy a decent angle grinder, you will need to cut off a lot of rusted bolts during a rebuild. Bulk buy replacement nuts and bolts! Unlike a bike, there will be times when you will need a big hammer - I mean a 2lb lump and a maybe even a sledge. If you don't have one, a ball joint splitter is essential for replacing the steering joints - there are quite a few of them.
Good luck!

Welcome to the world of Landies! Looks like you have a the start of a decent project, as with bikes you will get to the point of " why did I start this again?" but with more tea/fags/beer and the wealth of good advise on landyzone, you'll be fine. (just don't ask about tyre sizes).
Good luck, and keep us all posted on progress.

I'm a Landy newbie too, and like you a biker. All cars I've owned have either been boring or total money pits, so I bought another money pit. :clap2: Keep us posted on your progress. I wish I had the space to do a full-on resto, but as I don't, I had to fork out more money to get a nice(r) one.

Thanks for all the kind words guys, I will keep you all informed as to what is happening once i have started this project.

I was asked about how much it cost by Rasher, answer - £400, which considering the weight of the car i think is a fare price if i was even going to scrap it! but as it is to be a project I feel I got a bargin, and OK, I may need a new Chassis, new Bulkhead, and all doors replaced, not to mention the floor pan, and although that looks OK, it has signs of rust, but no holes, I am hoping that after I have sand blasted all the panels, most of the stuff will be repairable, well except the doors which are too far gone.

It looks like learning to weld will be a good thing so one of the first things I will do it get a good MIG, the only problem here is that in the Isle of Man you cannot buy Gas! So I am hoping this will not be too much of a problem, i will just have to grind down and cover up my bad welds!

I am finding a problem here though at the first hurdle, the Workshop Manual was not a problem, but to complete the set I cannot locate anywhere to download a user manual for the 1991 model, just would like it for the set, if anyone has a PDF anywhere or knows where I can find one I would be very greatful.

Looking on Amazon I noticed that they do a Haynes defender restoration manual, and as a set you can get the Haynes normal manual for the defender 110, are these worth getting???

My first gob is to build a shed to put the car in, so bare with me for a while, hopefully this will not be long, but the Manx weather here is a nightmare.

But thanks to all for the support, it is very much appreciated, and its nice to know i am not alone....

Talk about Manx weather? At least you may have found where the leaks are after the rain last night!

Also in IOM, I like the look of your new Landy good luck with it. I take it that it will need testing or has it been kept taxed.

If you are stuck for welding gas, a pal of mine has a stock of the rent free hobby gas cylinders on the island. He has just started with them but doing well, I will be changing over once I empty my current cylinder.

The Haynes manual is ok for the Landy. But most of the jobs have how to guides on the internet or vids on you tube.

It will need a fair bit doing, but at least the parts are cheap (don't go too cheap though as they will be made of toffee) compared to parts for my Evo 6 the Landy is but pocket change.

Good luck with the project and hope its on the road soon enough.

Hi Kes86,

Nice to see a local on the forum...

I take it that it will need testing or has it been kept taxed.

Thankfully it is still within the 2 years, so I will re-Tax before Christmas... Don't really want to get it re-Tested, though that said i will be replacing most of the bodywork here and it will be stripped down to the chassis to enable me to check and clean everything, so i dont think it would be too tramatic.

This sounds very interesting!

I have downloaded a lot of stuff off the good old internet, including some good videos from LandRoverWorkshopDVD.com and also TrailerFitter2 on YouTube that i think is sponsored by Paddock and has some really nice guides, so between these and this forum i hope to not run into to many problems.

Cheap would be nice, but shipping stuff from across is not cheap anyway, and i want this to be as good as a new one from those guys at Quaterbridge, which will mean it has to be good, plus i am too picky! Once i have a new galvanised chassis, bulkhead and doors, the rest will hopefully be a lot cheaper, well up until i get the interior done!

Thanks for the advice Kes86, all very much appreciated.

Parts wise, Paddock will ship to IOM for £8 if you spend over £50, anything under that is unfortunately £16 which is rough when you only need a small item. Avoid the cheap parts, I have been tending to go for allmakes recently.

I also get bits from Lace Autos behind the gas board. If they go on a stock order there is no post cost. He only gets decent stuff for you, so the prices may seem dearer than say Britpart but the quality should be oem.

Have fun.

At times you'd wish you'd taken up golf instead.... but it's worth it in the end :) :)

GOLF !!!!

That's it I'm binning it! There is no way that I'm gonna wear Rupert the bear trousers and start trying to hit a small ball with an expensive stick!
