Severe goings on under the bonnet (one of those old TDs). About a week ago my defender started pumping fumes into the cabin, litrally pumping, from somwhere under the bonnet. It then started blue smoking, thick blue smoke out the exhaust. Then, while i was sitting in traffic, i just touched the acceleator and the engine went full rpm on its own out of control. I killed the ignision but it took it a good 6 seconds to actually die. It keeps doing this, and its been making a ratteling noise when it does it. As u can imagen if decided to stop driving it untill ive sorced the problem/s. Can anyone make any sence of this? Im realy hoping a new head gascet will stop the smoke, but why is the throttle jamming open????

If u read all that im impressed ;)

Thanks, Richard.

the injun is running on the oil/fumes from the lube oil. disconnect any/all breather pipes and inspect/clean them. you may need new ones.
or just leave them off (pipe the fumes away) and let the injun breathe nice clean fresh air for a change.

Sounds like your terbo has just runn up on its engine oil. common fault is headgasket. thats why the rev went through the roof!!

Thanks for the replys....mixed oppinions. No the acceletator isnt jamed on the floor, its a bad reving up, feels like the engines bout to leap outa the bonnet. From uve said sounds like the turbo then...expensive...:(
P38 owner, are you saying a leaking head gasket can cause the turbo to...what esactly? lol

If your lucky listen to Ormus, if your unlucky listen to Yella. New turbos are £600ish. But and this is a big BUT they dont only fit them (Garrets) to Landies so if you did some homework you may be able to fit a tat yard one off some other vehicle. But then if your unlucky you probably wont.
