Hi guys. Firstly Happy New Year wishes to Everyone on the forum.
Secondly, I apologise if I am posting this in the wrong area, but I can't see where else would be appropriate.

I am after some advice that might save me from pulling out my last few remaining hairs.
Drove to Birmingham, car ran fine.

Had puncture on way back. RAC changed wheel then vehicle would not start. Easy-start used to get it running.

Drove home, vehicle ran fine.

Next morning vehicle would not start. Started with easy-start (made bad noises).

Easy-start was used a total of 11 times taking it to and from various places for opinions.

Finally diagnosed that all 6 injectors were faulty - all changed but running rough, ,very rattly and smoking heavily.

Head taken off, skimmed and some valves changed, cam followers changed, but still missing, rattling and smoking.

Injector loom changed - no difference.

EGR blanked off - no difference.

Replaced block that had done 72k but kept my refurbished head. All rattles gone, smoking gone but still got a miss in the higher gears.

Ticks over smoothly most of time but occasionally misses.

On diagnostics comes up with "smooth running sensor".

HELP!!

Many thanks to anyone who can offer some useful assistance here

Not sure on a Diesel - but Petrol engines use a knock sensor to adjust ignition timing to prevent pinking and knocking....The BMW M62TUB44 uses 4 sensors mounted in the Valley to detect cylinder misfires, pinking and knocking.

will have to research the M57 - maybe the Knock Sensor (if fitted) is telling the ECU to adjust fueling or Injection timing incorrectly and causing the engine to skip a tad...

Either that or the Easy Start has caused such knock sensor to have a paddy as it is is detecting a sudden 'punch' as Easy Start has a different Burn Rate than Diesel and as such the ECU can't quite figure out what the feck is causing this different knocking or sudden change in piston speed....

So after you have replaced all this stuff, the Knock Sensor could be duff!

Interesting, never heard of a knock sensor on a diesel, they knock on combustion as normal.
Excessive knocking can occur due to injection timing and fuelling problems but I'm no expert. Wammers would know more.

That's what I would have thought - No Knock Sensors on a Diesel...my was a theory if they do have one!

Will have to read RAVE to see if there is one or not!

If you have to use easy-start there is something wrong with your engine, you should only use it as a last measure as it can knock your big ends out if you rely on it.....

How on earth to you come to the conclusion that easy start will knock out big ends? For sure too much is not good and the M57 should not need it but big ends?

Easy-start is like nitrous and put's to much octane in to the bores if used incorrectly. There is a set procedure for using that stuff, and people use it like a throttle.
It can have the same effect as an engine sucking up water (hydrologic's) something has to let go somewhere either bigends, bent conrod, or a window in the side of the block.
Me knows this because I work for CUMMINS in Daventry and we make big diesel engines' starting @ 3000bhp and they test for things like that, if I get a min will dig out some pic's and show you they are quite interesting...

I think you mean Hydraulic...

When the Engine gets flooded it gets Hydrauliced...

Hydrologics is the study and effects of Water Management

I have a mate that has a BMW 330d that I believe has the same engine, he needed to change an injector because it was leaking off too much which drops rail pressure causing hard or no starting. When he changed just one injector it smoked like a pig for about 20 or 30 miles, apparently this is normal and if takes a while for the ecm the adjust the fueling. Long and the short of it it sorted its self out. Also I don't think I have ever known a common rail engine have all the injectors fail, just 1 failing will stop it from running, its usually the garage not doing the proper investigation work to find out which one has gone and they just replace them all.

How can all 6 injectors just become faulty ?!?! Lmao !

Probably just a duff sensor or ECU

Pretty sure diagnostics would point to the issue

According to post - the only Fault that pops up is Smooth Running Sensor....which is one I have never heard of before!

Petrols have knock sensors....but a 'Smooth Running Sensor' is new to me!
