Hello my name is Tom and I live in Staffordshire. I have been tinkering with Land Rovers for about 8 years and own a 1980 Airportable and a 1989 90 Hardtop.

The Airportable is currently in an unoriginal pick up format and I plan to convert that back to canvas and use it as my summer run around.

The 90 is largely original although it is now on a galvanised chasis. I plan to keep the battered patina of the body work but have gone through everything else and made sure it is tip top. It was running on its orignal 19J 2.5 TD engine and I managed to put 3000 miles on it last year before encountering problems, probably blown head gasket. Prior to me buying it in December 2023 it had done 450 miles since 1999. As a quick fix I bought a cheap 200tdi defender engine from ebay and dropped it in but I have encountered a few issues with it which have me a bit stumped.

Welcome Tom, Hope you enjoy the forum, I am just north of you in Cheshire.. Love the Lightweights, I didn't realise they were also called airportable. We went on LandyRally with a chap and his dad who were driving one 3000 miles in 9 or so days. I loved the mentality as he said it was designed to be dropped out of a Hercules what can I do wrong to it.

I remember it well as I sat on their tyre whilst they were doing brakes and some time later my good lady commented on the fact I had the tyre maker and size on the back of my shorts :)

I have a 200TDI if you need anything to compare/help.

Thanks ER1C. Mine still has the shackles attached to the chassis to allow it to be hung under a helicopter. I'll post about the specific issue I have later this afternoon.
