Bought a disco last week with no known probs (i believed him) day 2 reverse disapeared, no clunking or grating it just disapeared it was like trying to push the gear lever through solid steel, then i noticed the hazards kept flashing (alarm proplem??), went off rd and it stuck in diff lock (put this down to perhaps not being used recently) good deal of quick starts freed it and reverse came back, not had it off rd since but reverse has been fine:confused:

The difflock will prob stay on a bit after you disengage it because it will be wound up and tight, It usually comes out with a little time or just try reversing a little.

When you didnt get reverse, it hadnt jumped out of high/low had it?

What truck is it?

hadn't had it in high or low, its a p reg 2.5tdi, i know bugger all about Lrs, been told its a 300? series 3?....... i think its a series 1? i know its a 5 door and its got a snorkel, i can see me asking for lots of advice/help

Is it ok to drive if it stays on after disengaging ???????? would have tried reverse but didn't have one

high range gearbox is for normal driving, the little gear stick is back and right(innit?).
Low range is for towing offroading hill desents etc and you wouldnt go very quick if yer had it in that.Got any pics?

Got the levers in the right places, my mate sorted that, not sure just when to switch into low? I will get some pics on here. I also know bugger all about puters LOL, its my age
Low range is for low speed max torque. So i use it any time im offroad. Can also be used for towing really heavy loads. And engine breaking when going down steep hills ie off road.

Thanks,, thought it might have been only for really slippery surfaces, i;ve been told NOT use it on normal rds as it would bugger the box.......
No, thats diff lock. The low range can be used on any roads, you just wont go very fast, about 8mph in first,12in 2nd, less than 20 in 3rd and so on.Diff lock is for when you are gonna get stuck/lose traction or when you think you are gonna get stuck/lose traction.Dont use it on normal roads if yer wanna go round corners.

so! low range for general off rd and diff lock for extra traction when it gets slippy? what about rocky? diff lock or low?
Pretty much, Low gives alow speed, useful for rock crawling. As diff lock will help if yer get a wheel in the air see this [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Sr_5BQdUiw&feature=PlayList&p=538E1D3DFFE2AFE3&index=2"]YouTube - Range Rover Classic playing in a ravine[/ame]
