I changed my wiper cable on my defender put all back together fine started it up like normal fine turned it off and now my battery light stays on :( not happy any ideas please ?

the feed to battery light should be ignition live and is now constant live

As Fanny says, you've managed to backfeed to ignition somehow, either through incorrect wiring or something along those lines.

The ignition light is grounded by the alternator when the engine is stopped, and when the ignition is on this gives a circuit to light the lamp.

When the alternator is running it generates a little above battery voltage so the ignition light has 12|V one end and 12V the other so it goes out.

To come on with the ignition turned off suggests that the ignition circuit is become live through something other than the switch.

Could the altinator be back feeding or the ignition switch folty how can I
Come across the problem

okay

we supply + to alt via ignition and when engine off the alternator is - therefore + and - makes the light go on.

The Alternator needs 12 v + to excite the windings and for voltage regulation, when the alternator provides a charge we get

ignition + alternator output + so there is ++ not +- and light goes out.

it is more likely the ignition feed has become permanent live than faulty ign.

to test this if your alt has one plug, move wire retaining clip and remove plug, ignition off the 2 large terminals should have batt 12 v to earth

the small wire should have no 12v to earth with ignition off
