Hmmm.

No, they have a Korean built clone of a Mercedes diesel engine or a
Korean built clone of a Mercedes 3.2 petrol engoine on some models.

Welll, first there's the styling to get over. You have to admit, they
look ****. However few 4x4s are ever going to win prizes for looks so
that shouldn't be a consideration.

The few I have seen have been in such poor condition that I didn't feel
inclined to part with money for them. The reputation they have is as
gutless heaps, the 2.9 diseasel simply isn't good enough. The 3.2 petrol
was considered good enough as far as pulling power goes, but crappy for
fuel consumption.

Cheap and cheerless. OTOH the UN used to use a lot of them and they do
off-road reasonably well.

I wouldn't think MB would allow *anyone* to build copys of their engines,
why not just sell Ssangyong / Daewoo some??

The original 2.9 NA was extremely gutless, the later 95 on turbo's are alot
better but you still have to be patent!

Daimler-Chrysler permit SSangYYoonngg to build the engine under licence.
They also permit them to build the S-class Merc(previous generation)
under licence. And SSSSSSanggggyyyyyyyooooonnnnnggggggg sell it as the
Heavenly Joy Wagon or some such stupid name. It's on their web****e if
you care to look. Mercedes have permitted companies to build under
licence in the past. It's reasonably lucrative to do so because then
Mercedes don't have to invest in the plant to buld the engines
themselves or detract from European manufacturing requirements.

Because this deal works out better, money comes in for no outlay and no
inventory.

That depends on how far back you go - the earlier ones were sourced direct,
and then they started building them in Korea - with tighter tollerences.

They dont look that bad - but then again who cares what others think, if
looks are an issue and you dont like the looks then you dont buy. If he is
considering one then the looks dont put him off and that is all that
matters.

The early ones had some silly QC issues with rusting rims round the sun
roofs (top model), flaking paint on the body cladding and dodgy alloys -
these could make them look very tatty, but these problems were fixed pretty
early on and it is simply not true to imply that most are in tatty
condition.

The diesel is not that bad at all - yes TD is better, but as someone who
drove 80k miles in an early diesel and now drive something with a 3.5v6 I
dont thing the Musso ever failed to get me anywhere in perfectly reasonable
time.

Get one at the right price and you wull be laughing - only point of caution
is spares availability although that should be sorting itself out now.

Depreciation on an older one should not be an issue - and 12 months ago I
sold a 3 year old one in PX (against the best cash price I could get the new
car for - no loss of discounts) for 55% of what I paid for it new - what do
the books say?? - nothing like that!

Not a bad motor if what you are after is a heavy solid machine, limited
offroad abilities due to overhangs especially at the rear.
Engines solid Mercedes lump majority of parts are genuine Merc ones with the
merc badge embossed on them whilst later engines built under licence and
badged with Ssangyong.
Spares not a problem as Merc parts readily available and now Ssangyong
returned to UK parts becomming easier to get hold of.
Style you either love it or hate it like most things.
