I am going to be changing the gear box oil in my 1995 Discovery 300tdi manual.

I have 2.3 litres left of my 5 litre bottle from my last change on the TD5. I cannot get the same brand in less than 5 litre bottles. When I only need 0.4 litres, I feel miffed off buying another 5 litres of the same brand!

So, my question to the panel is....can I mix brands of MTF94. If I'm only mixing in at most 0.4 litres of different brand surely that will be ok? Being a tight git here trying to save those all important pounds!

You better put the 2.3l of that oil you have and top up with the same old oil which you drained out just pass it through a paper filter, better than mix brands IMO cos they use different additives even if the grade is the same(that's where the price difference is coming from) and knowing how "squeamish" the R380 is IMO it's better this way...though normally 2.3l should be exactly the required amount according to the book unless you have a cooler for the manual gearbox when 2.8l is required for oil change...2.6l is needed for box without cooler filled from dry.
