I visited the MOT test centre with my 300tdi 90 last week, first time with this vehicle. Not surprisingly it failed, I wasn't too disappointed though, a bit of welding on one outrigger and a wheel bearing that needed adjusting.

I was a bit annoyed about the welding I thought i had done all the repairs needed but not a major issue.

The front wheel bearing was a different matter, as soon as I removed the drive member I could see bits of bearing cage in the hub, I got the nuts off with a bit of help from a hammer and chisel, the thrust washer under the nuts had obviously grabbed at some point a turned into the stub axle so the flat no longer lined up, more hammer and chisel work. The outer bearing inner race had welded itself to the stub axle, yet more hammer and chisel work. The outer bearing was completely shot.

I eventually got the thing dismantled, made a list of parts required and went off to visit Paddock's for some spares. £90 later I set about rebuilding it.

A new bearing and oil seal in a new stub axle and back on the swivel housing with a fresh gasket and loads of grease. I cleaned up the hub and fitted the new bearings and oil seal, again with lots of grease, and refitted it over the stub axle. When I tried to fit the thrust washer it didn't fit, the hole in the middle was to small, no big deal I put it in the vice and opened out the hole with a Dremel. The thrust washer was the only Bripart component used, unbelievable, they can't even get the hole in a washer the right size.

So it's all back together now ready for a trip to the MOT place on Tuesday.

What I can't understand is apart from the slight lift in the bearing felt by rocking the wheel rim there were no symptoms of the bearing failure, no noise or grinding and the steering behaved normally, I suppose it's a tribute to how tough Landys are and how much abuse and damage they can take before actually breaking down.

Cheers mate I think I should be OK with the MOT.

My youngest son is home from University next week and his summer job is going to be prep'ing the chassis for some serious anti rust treatment. then apart from the steering box which I need to see to, the mechanics should be sorted. Then I can start looking at the interior and paint.

Landys can provide so much entertainment.:)
