Hi there,

Its time for the yearly service and an mot for my TD4. I have called Hadley Green and Stratstone Hainault(cowboys) to see what is the next schedule service. Its a 53 reg and with 23000 miles on the clock. I had the 48k service done two years ago with 17000 miles and a value service last year with just over 20000 miles. All with Stratstone. They are suggesting for the 72k/6 year service needs doing but is it worth paying full dealer prices or is it best going to a specialist? The annoying thing, Stratstone have done all but two services and not once have done a brake fluid change. The vehicle has not had a brake fluid change since new.

Look forward to your views.

Regards

the key to this is the age of the vehicle, and the money you spend on it against it's value. To suggest a 72000 mile service is madness, but having just had one on my 53 td4 at an independent, at about 1/2 the price of a main dealer, including some non-service items, (crankcase breather filter, turbo vent filter to name but two) a lot of the items are check/adjust anyway, and carry through at every service interval.

find yourself a good independent and give them the work. they should know from experience what will need looking at.

deffo get the brake fluid changed, it doesn't cost a lot, and it's now been in there 6 years !

Brake fluid and coolant change is included in a 36mth service, did you have a dealer service then?
They're due again now at 72mths.

I agree that an independent garage is the way to go, if they stick to the recommended service sheet you get the same job for half the price. You'd be daft to pay dealer prices just to subsidise their fancy premises, not so good training, inefficient staff and poor customer services.

Wot the other guys say.
Am a bit surprised though when you state that the dealer you used before are cowboys yet bothered to call them again. Me personally, if it's bad the first time then there aint no second or third time.

hi there,

The reason I called Hadley Green is to see how much they charge and to see the correct service for my vehicle. The reason I called Stratstone is to establish what they did as they stamped my book incorrectly. This only came to light when I spoke to Hadley Green.. With Stratstone is the one I had major issues with and I just wanted to see if Hadley Green could offer something better.

Try:

Harris Mayes Country Cars, Woodcock Hill Estate, Harefield Road,
Rickmansworth. WD3 1PQ. 01923 711800.

Not used myself yet but will at end of month. Maybe wait and see how I fare!

Hi there,

Booked my vehicle into Alymer in Hertfordshire. First signs are good as they sound very knowledgable and friendly. Asked about the 72 k service, even though mine has done 23k miles but they said they will check and assess the car on merit. They said its not worth changing certain items if they are ok, especially as I have 2k miles in the past year.

Will keep you guys updated.

Regards
Nick

Hi there,

Got the FL back and seems ok. Customer service was really good. They did a 72k/6 years service, changed the breather pipe on the turbo, changed brake fluid and the fuel filter, and an mot for £562.

About right on price?

Drives really nice.

Regards

Blooming heck...

We are very lucky to live close to a trusted land rover independent. Mist expensive straight service so far was £355. local family mechanic is between £250 and £300.

Cheers
