Evening All,

My L322 failed it's MOT last week as per my previous post.

So I have replaced stretched hand brake cable and ball joint that has fixed the first two points but tester also put:

Brake Lever has insufficient reserve travel 1.1.2(a)

Anybody speak MOT than explain this one to me?

If you have replaced the stretched cable, I assume the lever does not come up so far when the brake is applied, therefore there will be more "reserve travel"
 
Thanks Datatek, so this applies to the hand brake not the foot break? The hand brake was very bad it went all the way to the top and would really hold in drive. Now cable replaced it goes halfway up, two notches and you know it is on if you try and set off if you forget to disengage it

Wasn't the MOT test to hold on three clicks? Any thing more than that was the reserve travel from memory (which may have no basis in truth)
 
3 clicks registers in my memory too, as the ideal - as does 5 as the upper limit....

I might suggest you find an alternative tester if you think they are being unreasonable - When "my" tame and super helpful MOT guy got made redundant, the "new", er, "person" refused to test our D1's on the basis that "as they were LR's, they would be dirty, and he was not getting dirty for anyone" ... :confused:

Thankfully, I found "my" guy at a local garage before the dreaded date....:)

about half of its entire travel is ideal so if it has 6 clicks 3 is what to aim for but technically as long is it meets the required efficiency on the brake test they shouldnt fail it , if they do i would personally find another tester o_O

That used to be the case when cars had drum brakes, more than 3 clicks is needed on a lot of modern stuff. All that matters these days is that there is enough reserve travel to get you to the next MOT without all the movement being used up.
