Hi hoping for some help my friend has lost her MK1 Freelander keys and has no spare ,car is not locked, my question is if I buy a second hand ignition barrel with keys and immobiliser coil and fit it would it start? Or would the replacement parts need coding to the car? Any help would be appreciated thanks

The key has a chip in the black plastic part of the key. It is this chip that 'talks' to the coil and sends correct signal to the immobiliser module and then to the engine ecu.

Without the chip the car will not crank over. Ignition will work OK.

Even if you hard wire the cranking it will not start without the engine ecu receiving the correct code from the key chip.

Sorry, but this is now tricky. Always have a spare working key. Too late now I know !!

Only options are to buy a key from LR coded to match the car or replace the key chip, immobiliser module.and engine ecu from a vehicle that all match each other, I.e. from the same car.

Immobiliser module is pretty inaccessible without taking dashboard out. Some key sellers claim to be able to make a chip if you send them the immobiliser module but never tried it.

Sorry it isn't better news.

Thanks for your help I was going to swap ignition barrel immobiliser ring with the correct key from another Freelander would the ECU recognise this replacement key and immobiliser coil?

I think you will have to get a key and remote from a LR garage who can program it.

Failing that you are going to need to get all sorts of bits from a breakers.

Which bits depends on the year. Mine has the immobiliser chip in the fob, not the key. They started putting the chips in the keys from MY01, so in 2000.

No, the coil is purely a coil. No coding in the coil and same on all vehicles. The chip in the key which matches the immobiliser and engine ecu has to be present as above.

The coil in the ignition switch simply reads the RFID code in the key. The immobiliser reads the data from the RFID and sends that code to the engine ECU for authentication. If the codes match, the ECU allows the engine to crank and start. No correct authentication, and nothing will happen except the ignition lights coming on.
As said, you need a matching set of keys, immobiliser module, and engine ECU.
Getting a new set of keys ready coded to the car is the easiest thing to do, as changing the immobiliser is many hours of work, as it's installed in the vehicle before the heater assembly and dashboard are fitted.

I remember when owning a Freelander 1 2002. I had the key with the chip in, but because of the door lock mechanism failed. I had an expensive choice of replacement, or go for the early lock and retaining the chip key for ignition and tailgate door. I chose the latter. Could check scrapyards for models near your vehicle age and getting that recoded. Landrover retailer will be expensive as they will have to get the parts and then coding then fitting fee.

Many thanks for everyone's support and advice I think the cost from landy stealers will be far in excess of what the vehicle is worth which is a shame. Thanks again everyone.

There are people out there than can do replacement keys & fobs. My son had a guy based in Bedford that programmed a FoB & spare keys for his 2004 FL1 TD4.

Not sure if auto locksmith can be of help here for a reasonable price. I remember the chap who sold me a fob had to access the port to program it.

This seams to imply it is for both alarm and immobiliser, however, it may just be the alarm. worth checking though...

Used them on a Defender. They send a new remote and dongle you plug into the obd socket, it codes the new remote to the car. You didn't need the original fob when you coded it.

All good for Fobs. No good for keys
OP has lost key with chip in.
I agree the immobiliser chip is in the key not fob. So maybe they expect you to have the original key rather than getting 1 cut or replacement key and barrel. However, it does say...

If you cannot start your Freelander this replacement key fob and programmer will still work.

If your Freelander alarm and immobiliser in on or active the new key fob will work

The new Freelander key fob will work if you cannot turn off the alarm or immobiliser

This may only be for 97-2000 cars. Or maybe they put another chip in the fob. I do seam to remember @pscan.eu saying you can't program 1 bit of the security for some cars - this may be the key chip.

Just asking another question if I have the immobiliser deleted in the ECU will the Freelander start with another barrel and key? As ECU won't need a code . Thanks in Advance

The immobiliser module will prevent the starter motor turning, the ECU will prevent starting so presumably you need to delete the ECU immob function and then rewire the starter to operate without the key chip and code.

Worth pursuing I think if you can get ECU modified. Not done it but I know that if you feed the starter relay directly you can get it to crank and so what you propose sounds feasible.

Let us know if it works. Obviously the vehicle is then less secure - insurance and stuff !!

👍 car only used for going up and down farm and to local shop so no major security risk as never locked anyway will let you know Cheers
