Hi there folks,
wonder if anyone can possibly help/advise. The mileometer on our "newly purchased" Freelander
has started to have mis-shaped digits on it. It
perhaps would look like a digital watch when the
battery is going soft. On occasion it looks fine then
it will go bad again - any ideas ?

Probably corroded contacts on the flatcable. I had the same problem with my clock/radio-display and one of the members here explained what he did to cure it so I did likewise and since then that display works even better than new. While doing the job I saw the contacts became all grey/greenish, scraped them clean and all ok now. So my guess is the same happened to your odometer contacts. Not sure of course, just wanted to be helpful (hopefully).

if yu need to clean up contacts, an ink erasure (the green/white type) (before Slob goes on about rubbers;))is a good bet - We use it regularly on PCB's - it is quite gentle and doesnt rub through (if you dont go at it madly)

take it back anyway - if the mileometer cant be read - how can the seller confirm mileage - if its bin clocked - tsk tsk - call mr Plod. I reckon yu cud take it back, warranty or no if its from a company, rather than a private individual.

y' know there are people the say they repair these dashes if they have a spoiled read out. after reading this thread am thinkin do they just clean the contacts on most of them, then charge you a small fortune for having 'fixed' it
or is it the contact on the cable that needs doing?...........or both..

Thanks for all the replies folks !!!!!
Unfortunately, not under warranty and bought private.
The display in miles can be read, but some of the chars
are a bit misshaped or feint.
Is the dash easy to come out, or can it ba tackled from
below the dash ?

the lcd digits are internal ,so the fault is gonna be inside the gubbins ,it has its own eprom so as to re call odemeter figure ,so if new one fitted or s/hand one that is the figure ya start from, just like the old anolog type really. . .be carefull and follow anti static rule ,same as a puter, and best oh luck. . .:)
