Might buy this 110

Next week, I am going to see this 110. Not my first Land Rover (I own a 94 LWB Range Rover) but my first Defender; what should I look for ? What is a good compression on 200tdi engines ?

This truck would be used for travelling in south america.

It shold start from cold without waiting for the glowplug lamp to go out. A bit of smoke on start up is ok but it should clear very quickly. Also check the following for leaks hand brake drum, power steering pump, water pump P gasket. Clutch master & slave cylinders. Brake lines etc. check for emulsion in the engine oil filler cap and with the engine running and the oil filler cap on remove the dipstick and check for smoke/oil blowing out the diptube. have a good prod & poke at the chassis. and then take it for a test drive to listen for bangs clunks and rough gear changes. also check difflock & lo/high works properly.

first off it aint a feckin truck and secondly i dunt think it meks too much of a difference if its in south americky or southampton

200tdi probably landrovers best for your trip no electronic wizadry. But a lot of South America is 1300ft or 3000m plus. Quite a difference to sea level Southampton. Diy below 500 quid will refurbish a good 200tdi also change to a r380 gearbox. Boost battery power you need it to start at altitude. good luck on your travels
