When I owned a Neon, I could rotate the ignition key 3 times to get
computer codes up to 5-5. From that, I had the meaning of the codes
and some idea about some problems that the car may have.

I now have a Tribute. Can I do the same? How do I do it? Where are the
references on-line to the codes?

Thanks in advance.

there is no way to do that on your tribute. the feds have done away wth
that ability on all vehicles since obdII came into effect. it is most
likely a dpfe sensor that is bad. this is the sensor that measures
exhaust flow through the egr valve. it may also be an evaporative
emissions code. most big service stations will have a scan tool to check
codes with. if it is the dpfe sensor it is a very easy thing to replace
and is also available at a ford dealership (as ford and mazda are the
same thing) if your mazda dealer is not local.

You need a code reader to get the Tribute Codes. Since the Tribute is
largely a Ford, the codes are the same as for a Ford. www.obdii.com has
a list.
