M62 Murders! Do I Need to Replace My Head?

Hi All,

I thought I would come to the experts with regards to my M62 4.4 gas converted engine in my Range Rover 04 plate.

The left bank was not firing at all (by left I mean if you are standing in front of the car looking at the engine, its the left hand side). I followed the fault by swapping the coil heads, spark plugs and the cam sensors over from the right hand side and the problem still persisted. I then went further down the engine and noted an oil leak from the VANOS solenoid on the left hand bank. I then noted the solenoid on the right hand bank is new. On closer inspection of the leak, I noticed one of the bolts holding the plastic seal over the solenoid was loose, so I unbolted the entire seal (covered in a mystic sealant of some sorts) and removed the solenoid with a 32mm box spanner - cheaper than the official tool and fitted a treat. When I loosed the solenoid, the casted thread that the solenoid screws into came with it! Basically its snapped away from the head. This must have already been weakened as I hardly put any pressure on it and the whole assembly looks like it was thrown back together by whoever damaged it in the first place.


So my questions to the forum are as follows:-


1) Will I need to buy an entire new cylinder head?

2) As its gas converted, will the head need to be modified to refit the existing gas conversion? I'm not sure how they do the gas conversion. Do they tap a they tap a thread into the head for an injector or something?

3) I am based in SE London and would be grateful if anybody could recommend a one stop shop to take care of all of this for me.

That then is the right bank. Engines are usually described in the direction they travel. Right side of engine on right side of vehicle.

Bet that helped him solve the problem.

Is it running on petrol?
It's usuall to get her running on wet fuel first, what's the spark like

That ain't really helping either , without the vanos solenoid fixed in place it ain't going to run on anything. As far as I know the solenoid does screw into the head but I'm away so don't have any of my pics. I am changing all my timing chains and guides on my M62 next week so will have a better idea when I'm in there.
You could try BMW specialists I am in Kent but never found anyone willing to work on an M62 to that extent.
Whether somebody could tig that back in for you without changing the head is a big question..
