Can anyone help me diagnose what's wrong...

The symptons are as follows...

Noise when changing down e.g. when I select 2nd/1st when the landy is still moving slowly like when approaching a junction. The same sound can be heard if I dip the clutch and let the car coast in 1st. Sound stops when car comes to a standstill or when I let the clutch out so the gear engages.

Any help would be appreciated!

release bearing knackered? maybe, hard to tell what actions your doing with the clutch in all those scenarios?

if so you will be glad to know its not part of the gearbox, but you will have to split the gearbox from the engine to change it.

I am sure JM will be along to put me right if I am in error :p

is it noise that comes on stood still pressing clutch or only coasting ,what kind of noise ,why are you changing into 1st while moving

Thanks Fett.

Jamesmartin - was just testing scenarios to see when the noise happened hence changing into 1st when moving - but I was only literally rolling at less than 5mph when I did it.

Just been for a drive and it's hard to explain but the noise sounds a bit like 'chattering'.

it just happened as I drove up to my road, depressed the clutch and went to change down. The gearbox wouldn't let me change down, nor change back into the gear I'd come from and only when i stopped could I put it back into gear...

Tested for play in the front prop - there's about 15 - 20 degrees. UJ's look ok, but there is a little oil leak from the connection between the transfer box and prop.

I wouldnt worry about the oil leak on an lt95 lol , you will never stop em :p

I have one in my 72 rrc and they dont really like you changing gear if they are not in the mood as I am sure you well know, especially down a gear if not at the right speed exactly lol :p

is it worse than normal then or havnt you had it long?

they dont like selecting gears sometimes as dogteeth on gears will be worn flat ,the dog teeth are triangular shaped on gear and baulk ring and as pushed together by selector inner part cone of baulk ring grips gear cone like a brake to align there speeds and the two triangle teeth meet point to point sliding past each other into gear ,when end becomes flat they wont slide easily past each other ,but hit end on,not allowing gear selection, the other thing that happens is cone on baulk ring wears to a point where that it no longer grips gear cone and so when teeth meet they are doing different speeds this gives your grating while trying to change gear

Fett - Had it a year now. Just seems to have got worse recently. Didn't notice the oil leak before now, thought it may be coincidental...

JM - thanks for the explanation - should I look to replace the gearbox before long or just accept it as it is? I have looked at a couple on ebay earlier, £300 - £500, and if it is something that eventually happens to everyone then I guess I'll just live with it.

i would get it looked at sometime but you really need to find somone who understands that box unless you want to pay a fortune, used as as likely to be as bad through age

they are very tough, it probably wont give up completly on you.

I would say a good test for release bearing it to have it in N on drive with engine running and listen for noise, then push and hold your clutch in and if the noise starts or get a lot worse then its probably that.

They are quite noisy boxes anyway as I am sure your used to. Hve you tried double-de clutching and seen if that makes it go in easier at any speeds?

Just gave that test a go - slight chatter in neutral, no worse with the clutch down.

Tried double-de clutching - no improvement.

I think its just showing its age!

one of the many good things about lt95 is that you can remove top and check parts inside ,lift of carefully as top holds 3 x detent springs down in middle of cover

probably not that release bearing then, over to you James :p

Btw bert how many miles has that box done do you think? and hows the oil level in it?

where did you learn your terminology i ve allways known it as cp constant pinion ,not saying ones right or wrong

First motion shaft is what it's called and always has been. Name that because it is the first gearbox shaft to move when clutch is engaged. There both the same James.

no you misunderstood with lrs its cp with other makes different, what you learnt on usualy sticks

Yes James sorry, that is what i have always known it as. I had honestly never heard of a CP shaft until you said that never heard it called that. To be honest it's a bad description in my view. First motion shaft is much easier to visualise. :):)
